Back To Baking.

I keep saying l would, but this time l definitely will. The price of my favorite multi -grain bread has gone up again. Time for me to stop procrastinating and and bake my own bread. It will be cheaper, tastier and l will know the exact ingredients that are in it - no preservatives for sure. Of course l will have to factor in the use of my gas when baking, but l can bake other foods at the same time. Which food that you love is now more expensive than a couple years back.? Do you substitute or continue to buy it?

It seems like everything has gone up, breads and baked items have risen greatly. I just try to use things sparingly and not to waste, that is my best method of saving on anything and everything.

I think cake price has increased a lot than in the past. I don't often buy cakes since I found it's easy for me to bake them. Sometimes I found it is even harder to bake the bread since the dough needs some time to rise. And it is difficult in winter. Whereas it is alright to make a cake anytime.

@Kandae11 It's only been the last few weeks that the price has suddenly increased. Maybe there is a supply shortage.

@JudyEv That happens when there is a supply shortage yes. Whenever there is very bad weather here and some crops are damaged the prices of some vegetables usually go up, but come down again in two months or so.

In India most of the food item prices have gone up, especially fruits and milk products. I make rotis with multi grain flours everyday and buy brown bread to make French toasts.

I bake a lot of our bread. It tastes better and it does save money. Our local grocery wants $5 for a loaf of rye, and several of the really good multigrains are at least $6. That's a lot for just bread in my opinion.

@Kandae11 Multigrain, larger loaf, I cannot remember the brand. When I saw the price, I walked away. Neighbor got a loaf of rye, she knows that's my favorite. She found it on sale for $4.49 and thought that was a bargain. It's just difficult sometimes to find any bargains, isn't it?

it's really great if we can make our own food. Of course because we know what is contained in it. I used to really like the chicken katsu in curry sauce near my house and bought it a lot. But, as time goes by, the price keeps going up and up. So now, I also started making my own katsu. I'm so happy, because I can get a bigger portion of katsu.

One thing here is the price of Crisco vegetable shortening. Not long ago it was $5 a can, now it's over $10. I only use it when we fry fish or shrimp and I do reuse it a couple of times. But it is way too expensive.
