Boil water notice

A city employee just taped a boil water notice on our door. Our city sources its water from a spring. It is treated, of course. According to the note all the recent rain has stirred up the water and the chlorine levels are not high enough to be safe. We are to boil water for cooking and put bleach in our dishwashing water until further notice. I am glad I got some more bleach last week. Oh, and discard all ice from our ice machine. I wonder how long this has been a problem. I was a little sick on Sunday, but Bob was not. They said that the Kansas Department of Health and Environment will have to issue an all clear. We can still shower and do other things like cleaning.

It happened here years ago, the municipality distributed bottles of water to drink and to cook.

We are on our own to provide for ourself. Several years ago, when I worked for a different school, the town had their water lines break from freezing. The school wanted us back in session and provided bottled water for all at school. It did not affect the town I lived in, but half the town where the school was. They felt the kids were safer in school.

@GardenGerty - We had the bottles delivered until they fixed the problem. We pay for our tap water after all.

I'm glad our city water is pulled from around 500 feet below the surface. It's still treated but I've never heard of a "boil" order here. I hope you get an "all clear" soon.

I actually like the spring water, but Mother Nature has been unkind this year.

@DaddyEvil I have had people say that about ours. The lady that used to live here and taught herbal classes said she would not, because of all the agricultural run off.

@GardenGerty When I was still a kid on the farm, sometimes dad would take 25 gallon milk cans and fill them at the local spring and bring them home for us to use instead of the well water. It always tasted better but I'd never try drinking from that spring now.

I remember when I lived in Vancouver, after very heavy rains, the silt would get stirred up in the reservoir and we'd have brown water for a day or two. That's when I bought me a Brita pitcher.

The way I understand what I am reading here that is part of the problem, but my water is not cloudy. They said it might be but that it also messed up the chlorine balance, so we have to boil and also add bleach.

We cannot use tap water for drinking, nor for cooking food. We haven't done that for a very very long time. Our tap water is only good for bathing, washing the dishes and doing our laundry.

They want us to add bleach to the dish water as well. I have boiled water on hand and we will be fine, but I do not want to do it long term. I am sorry you have to.

@toniganzon When I was growing up my grandparents had to boil water in order to have any hot water, they drank well water but all other water came from a cistern. This is not really too much of a problem and it lasted just a little more than a day.

@GardenGerty we are used to it and we have been living normally like that. So even when we went to other countries, we still avoid drinking tap water.

Every now and then; there is a boil water notice around where I live. I believe it it is a good idea that they do it.

Do they know what causes it where you are? With us it was more rainy days than usual.

That stinks. I think the last time we had that happen it was because of a tornado.

I have never been any place that I had to do this that I remember. It may have happened in my childhood in Oklahoma, though.

@AmbiePam It probably would not hurt us here either, but we are so citified here. I hate it when I go someplace and the reservoir that provides water has "turned over". Everything tastes mossy to me then. At least we do not have that with a spring.

@GardenGerty Oh, really? That's good. The last time we had a warning, at one point I forgot. After drinking a funny tasting glass of water I looked in the bottom of my glass, and I guess it was sediment? Whatever it was, was in the bottom of my glass. My dad told me to toughen up, it wouldn't hurt me. I remember I had been trying to clean up after Annabelle, and I just kept absent mindedly reaching for the glass.

Oh that definitely could be why you were feeling a little sick. I have a well so have never been effected during boil water advisories.

@GardenGerty One time I was living in a town that had an edict like that. It was due to Giardia being found in the water. I am not sure how long it lasted, but it seemed like forever at the time.

Sometimes it makes you wonder how our ancestors survived without the government telling them what to do. (Yes, to be fair, our ancestors didn’t have nuclear power plants sitting by rivers or toxic waste or other things.)

My grandparents had a well on their property for drinking and cooking. They collected rain water in a cistern. Gramma always put bleach in her wash basin, though.

I think there is some kind of a constant monitoring here. I hope your water is okay. I know lots of people who will only drink bottled water. I do not mind boiling it.

Yes, it is. Hubby says we could put a drop or two of iodine in it. I reminded him we do not have iodine on hand but that we do have bleach.

My grandparents did, too. I usually keep some water on hand, and it does not take much for just Bob and I. I just do not want to forget and drink tap water, which I am prone to do.
