Do Animals Dream?

I notice our cats make little noises when they are sleeping. Sometimes they yowl or move their legs like they are running. I wonder if they are dreaming and whether it is a good dream or a bad one. Do your pets dream? How do you know they are dreaming? What could they be dreaming about?

I know dogs do, and apparently cats as well.

I believe they all dream. I wonder if wild animals dream or only pets?

@Gillygirl That is a wise decision. If they are dreaming that someone is chasing them and wake up because you are there, there might be trouble when they see you.

I have seen Roscoe move his legs like he's running and even snarl or whine or bark sometimes but I haven't been able to watch Tuffy, he's really good at hiding.

It's possible he's dreaming of playing with his buddies next door. Oh yes, he'll chase anything that runs. Yes, Tuffy is a siamese mix

What do you think Roscoe is dreaming about? Does he like to chase anything? Is Tuffy a cat?

@rebelann The Siamese really are the best! My Star is a Siamese mix, but the vet says he's more like a Snowshoe.

I've always heard "experts" say our pets dream. I think my Sadie dreams of chasing cats, barking at ringing door bells, and gobbling down a kid size pool of wet dog food.

@akalinus And when she doesn't get the wet food, she literally gives me the side eye. (Shakes head.)

@AmbiePam Our cats like wet food too. They don't get it often. It is a prescription food and it is very costly. They usually get the dry food.

Sadie sounds like fun. She seems to like everything, especially wet food.

I think they dream, for sure. Like you said, you can often see a sleeping cat or dog make a noise or even move their arms and feet around. Our dog has even barked in his sleep!

Does your dog bark a lot when he is awake? I wonder what he was dreaming about. I'm glad to see you back here. I have been missing you.

@moffittjc He must have been dreaming of another dog in his territory and chasing it away. He wanted to be the king of the dogs.

@akalinus He wasn't much of a barker, except for when he saw other dogs. He did not like other dogs at all.

I would say yes, cats probably do have dreams. I know dogs that I've owned, had dreams. Puffer would flap his feet, as if he was running and at times he'd give a tiny woof.

@kobesbuddy I wonder if he was dreaming of chasing something. I had a dog once that liked to chase rabbits. Another dog liked to chase cars. I don't know what it would do if it ever caught one.

@akalinus Puffer would 'woof woof', while his feet appeared to be running.

We always say when the dogs are doing the running motions and such when they are sleeping that they are chasing rabbits! I think they definitely dream.

@MarieCoyle We lived in the country and the dogs were mostly free. They liked being outside.

I had a childhood dog that used to chase rabbits. She was part beagle and she bayed (barked) when she ran. For years after she passed, I would catch glimpses of her running through the brush baying (barking) her little heart out. Did your dog chase rabbits?

@akalinus My dogs were always either in the house, or on walk with a leash, or in our fence when I was outside. They didn't get a lot of chances to chase real rabbits. They just chased them in their dreams!

Sometimes I think animals are just people in disguise. Maybe they don't have exactly the same thoughts but they do have an active imagination and dreams.

@Jenaisle I think so too. That is why I wrote this post. I wanted to see what you all think and if your animals dream.

Have you seen your cat dreaming? Does it make noises as well as running? They are so interesting to watch.

I'm sure dogs dream. Sometimes they seem to be really racing with their legs going ten to the dozen while they're asleep.

@JudyEv I would love to know what they are dreaming about. If we could just experience what they see when they are sleeping, it would be amazing.

I think that the consensus here is that they do dream. Many of the replies here show that people noticed eye movements, noises, and running legs. I just hope they have happy dreams and never nightmares.

I know that our dogs always dreamed. They were out chasing some sort of animal...those legs were definitely running in their sleep, they would "bark" and their eyes would be "looking around". Have a great day.

@LindaOHio It is funny how dogs like to chase different things. Some like to chase rabbits and others chase groundhogs or other animals.

How could you tell that the birds dreamed? I wonder what they dream about. Do they have flying dreams?

I've noticed that with my cat. One day he was sleeping he literally jumped up and raised his back and gave him a mighty hiss. Must have been a huge dog after him.

Scientific studies show that animals do dream. About what, we don't know. My fishies are funny when they sleep. The guppies can't close their eyes but you can tell they're really asleep because they will swim into the glass wall of their tank, turn and go back to sleep while swimming toward the next wall.
