Scientists are very concerned about the temperature of the waters in the Miami/Key West area which are increasing due to climate change. Normal temperatures are in the 73-88 range; but temperatures lately have been reported in the mid 90s (35 Celsius). These very warm temperatures can cause bleaching of the coral reefs, leaving them pale and vulnerable. Stressed corals expel their colorful algae symbionts. Coral reefs provide homes for millions of marine life species, support healthy ocean food webs, protect coastlines and help support the local economy as a tourist attraction. Climate change could kill the Earth's coral reefs by the year 2100. In response to this crisis, scientists are propagating and transplanting healthy corals from the lab to the ocean in an attempt to place heartier specimens out in the water. We finally got some more rain yesterday. Our plants enjoyed it for sure!!
