Old Sayings from Appalachia’

We were discussing old sayings on mylot a few days ago and thinking of those that are familiar to us. So here are a few more I’m thinking of. Please add those that are familiar to you if you will. He’s lower than a snakes belly. That dog won’t hunt. Nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rockers. She can’t help being ugly but she coulda stayed home. That’s like the pot calling the kettle black. It’s raining cats and dogs. As sure as God made little green apples. He’s flying high as a kite. I’ve been around the wood shed a few times. Come on in and take a load off your feet.

Some I have heard and some not. Hey, what about that song? And God didn't make little green apples and it don't rain in Indianapolis in the summertime etc

Is that your painting? It’s beautiful! My dad used to say he or she’s in tall cotton. He used to pick cotton in the fields, so I guess that made sense to him.

In Spanish people used some sayings as old as Don Quijote. But this generation has changed our languaje a lot.

@RubyHawk I often believe that the young generation will forget language. They have already started by forgeting how to read and write.

I’ve heard those and so many more all my life. They are not as common though as they used to be. Everything eventually fades away.

I always remember Mama saying a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. That is your painting isn't it Ruby? I would love to have that so pretty.

You have me trying to remember what Granny liked to say on the Beverly Hillbillies. Sure as Shootin'? Something about possums.

Yes, I recognize quite a few of them. He’s lower than a snake's belly. Nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rockers. Those are 2 I've never seen. Old sayings are quite clever aren't they. -A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. -A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. -A fool and his money are soon parted. -A friend in need (is a friend indeed) -Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are 5 well-known ones

There is one I cannot put my finger on. Something about a toad choker, or something. Implies that there is so much rain it is drowning the frogs and toads. Does that one come to mind and can you fix it for me?

Some are funny and some are insulting. The insulting ones were usually said behind someone’s back.
