Attending a meat-tasting lunch

We live in an over-55s village. We have a clubhouse and a social committee that organises various entertainment/outings for the residents. One of the ways to raise money for these various activities is for residents to participate in a meat-tasting day. These are run by the Lamb Marketing Board and a fee is paid to organisations that participate. There was one run in our village this morning. There are three sessions of about 30 people in each. We sat in a little cubicle and were given samples of grilled lamb and had to assess each sample on taste, juiciness and flavour. There were seven samples and not everyone had the same sample at the same time. Between samples, we were meant to have a sip of diluted apple juice, then a cracker biscuit and more juice to ‘cleanse the palate’. I was going to add picture a photo of Hercules, my pet sheep, but it would be very unkind to put his photo up on a post about eating mutton. So imagine instead a yummy dish of your favourite meal.

Herc surely would appreciate that you did not put his photo up in a post about lamb tasting lunch. I hope you enjoyed the samples.

@JudyEv It is possible, I like juicy and tender meat, I am not really for tough meat.

Two of the samples were mouth-watering but a couple were a bit tough. I guess that's what they're hoping for anyway - to find out what people like best.

@LadyDuck They possibly used different cuts for each sample too.

That sounds like my kind of thing if the meat was beef . Did you enjoy it?

I did enjoy it. There wasn't enough meat to replace a meal but it was interesting. They also do fish and beef from time to time. I'm not sure if you can specify the sort of tasting you'd prefer.

@flapiz Haha - no, no sides allowed. The pieces were pretty tiny. You'd only want one lettuce leaf and half a tomato for sides.

@allknowing I don't mind trying a LOT but I get tired of it before I get to 'umpteen'.

I won't eat lamb anymore. Your tasting sounds interesting. You probably wouldn't be able to post Hercules' picture anyway. Such a bummer as I'd like to see it. Hope you and your hubby have a great day.

We don't eat much lamb now as it's so expensive. We mostly have pork and chicken.

Interesting, never heard of a meat tasting. I haven't had lamb or mutton alot. It is generally quite expensive here, and kind of hard to find outside out of the holidays here.

There is plenty in our shops but it's an expensive meat here. We buy it on special but usually it's pork and chicken for us.

It was an interesting experience. So much depends on how it's cooked.

When I read the headliner I thought the meat tasting would be about the various types of meat like beef, pork and lamb. I only recall eating leg of lamb once and was not impressed with it, either mom didn't know how to cook it or the meat just didn't sit right with me, not sure which.

I get that. Mom cooked a lot of beef but I can't recall ever liking it that much, I preferred chicken and still do.

It's probably just an individual's taste. We grew up on lamb and mutton on the farm but it's expensive now.

As long as the mutton is still hot from cooking, I would love it... If it had a chance to cool down before it made it to me, though, mutton has an odd taste to it and I won't eat it. I hope you all had fun.

The samples were brought straight from the kitchen to us so they hadn't got cold. It was fun and quite interesting really.

I do think that a picture of Herc and a mutton tasting would be cruel However, I hope you enjoyed your meat tasting. It sounds like a fun day though

It was interesting. They went to great trouble to get individual responses without us talking to one another about the samples.
