Why do coffee cup handles not break off more often?

Sometimes my mind is empty. Other times it probes the depths of the human experience. This morning, as I was walking from my kitchen to my desk, the latter occurred. I realized that if the handle to my coffee suddenly gave way, my coffee could come crashing down on my $1000 tube amplifier, destroying it. But for all of the odd things that have happened to me, I don't think I've ever had a coffee cup handle break. Is it voodoo? God? Or is there some special way "they" attach coffee cup handles to coffee cups? Inquiring minds...

The less you use a microwave to re-heat coffee in the mug, the less likely the handle is to break off. Handles can break off if the mug is cheap or not made well, though. But good mugs should last a long time without breaking.

What is this "microwave" thing you mention? I have never had one. But I have heard about them.

I love the really heavy, hand made, kiln fired mugs. I always have. They are works of art, and I am pretty much convinced that my coffee tastes better drinking from them, rather than a store-bought cup. I don't think there is a special way to attach the handle. If they are made in mass production, I suppose there could be the occasional issue with the equipment they use? I don't really know. I had one mug I really liked. I used it all the time. One morning I poured my coffee in to my precious favorite mug, lifted it by the handle, and the handle snapped off! Boiling hot coffee everywhere, but the worst was my mug..I had never had that happen before then, and it's never happened since. I still love the heavy handmade mugs.

@MarieCoyle I believe you. Had Pony said the same thing, I would not have. LOL

That happens? Blink...I mean, lifting by handle and the cup dropping off....blink. Never happened to me. So I thought Pony was just being funny. Now I understand the legitimacy of his question.

@vandana7 Until it happened to me that particular day, I had not heard of it happening to anyone before.

He did penance in his last life, and god asked him, what do you want my son. He then said with his usual innocence, if you could give a cup that has a handle that will not break ever, I will be eternally grateful. And the Lord said...Lo behold, here is a cup I give thee, thine to use in next life, but thee shalt not try to throw it around...as the list of thy sins is fairly large. And so Pony is using his blessings, and wondering where they came from.

@vandana7 And now we know why the handles hold up so well

Maybe you're just lucky - and maybe, just maybe, next time you may not be so lucky.

I have extremely logical reasons for that Judy. 1. As you said, he is lucky; 2. The cup pities him like all the myLotters treating him like Charlie Chaplin; 3. The handle of his cup is deeply in love with the cup part even though it is way too heavy 4. Pony holds his cup with two hands just in case...after all the damage can be $1000 USD. 5. Pony is holding a plastic cup... Whatever...I don't want to hurt Pony. I am basically a nice and kind person, especially to Pony.

@TheHorse I'd no sooner replied to this than I broke the handle off a coffee cup. I think it was all your fault!

I think it's in the way they are designed. coffee cups are built to take heat because most people put coffee in them.

I want to know how those handles are attached to the cup.

It happened once to me, the coffee cup had traveled in my luggage from California to home. I am sure it was damaged and the hot coffee caused it to detach. I did not spill coffee, as I place the cup on the table first and then I pour the coffee.

The only coffee cup handle that broke was a cup that one of the grandkids made. I didn't want to get rid of it, so it now holds pens.

Never in my life - which is longer than yours - have I broken off the handle of a cup. I would have to smash the cup to accomplish this.

I guess they make them purposely that way, so they don't fall off

I thought that too. I wonder if they reinforce the handle to cup link somehow.

I often think of my plastic cup from Dunkin' Donuts. What happens if the handle comes loose? The only catastrophe I've had recently was when I fell asleep and coffee spilled all over me, my chair and the carpet! Have a good day.
