Celebrate National Pancake Day!

I really enjoy pancakes when I go to a diner. They are like comfort food to me. I even enjoy them for supper. How about you? And did you know they have a day to celebrate the pancake. The origins of this special day were initially known as "Lumberjack Day" in 2005. Now, September 26th is the official National Pancake Day! A day I can certainly get behind. Pancakes date back more than 30,000 years. Most historians agree the first pancake-like dish, known as "Alita Dolcia" was made by Romans in the 1st century AD from milk, flour, egg, and spices. That just might make pancakes the oldest breakfast food in history! Honey was poured over those early Roman pancakes, although I prefer syrup which we can thank the Indigenous tribes in America for making. When the colonial settlers arrived from Europe, they learned the tree taping techniques from the native tribes and produced their own syrup. You could say, just like peanut butter and jelly, this combo became "the" popular toping for pancakes. It was even said Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson were big fans of pancakes for breakfast. Of course, syrup is not the only topping which makes pancakes yummy. Fruit and whipped cream are a couple of items that have been added to make those "flapjacks" into a dessert like treat. Do you put any special topping on yours? A competitor to pancakes popularity is the waffle, another favorite breakfast food found on menus at IHOP, Denny's, and other eateries who focus on breakfast items. Which do you prefer? Pancakes or waffles? I like both a lot but give waffles a nod due to their crispiness. Oh wait, I forgot about French Toast too, another breakfast treat. So, which one do you favor? P.S.- Gee, I wonder if they have a National Waffle or French Toast Day too? Sources: National Day Calendar, Mental Floss, Easy Food No photo but here is a way to make a "fluffy pancake!"

Yes, instead of putting blueberries or strawberries on top, you can put them inside. More work but just as tasty. Additional Fun Pancake Facts: Did you know... -R. T. Davis Milling Company, which produced the first pancake mix in 1888, hired storyteller, cook, and missionary worker Nancy Green as a spokesman for their company. She became known as the Aunt Jemima character portrayed on their syrup and mix. The image has since fallen victim to woke politics. -In the United States, southerners eat the most pancakes (accounting for 32.5% of the pancake consumption.) -Pancakes have also been called Johnnycakes, griddle cakes or hotcakes.

Of the choices you gave, I would go waffles. Pecan waffles are my favorite, and diners make the best ones, in my opinion. However, it has been a year and a half since I have had a pancake, and I can’t remember the last time I had a waffle.

Good choice! They are very filling but actually contain less calories than waffles. I never walk away from eating pancakes still hungry, lol. They are both great for different reasons and I enjoy both. Vince makes great pancakes and I have them quite regularly. He sometimes gives them a savoury filling as a light meal.

@dgobucks226 I bet they didn't toss that biggest pancake! We're having seafood crepes for dinner but perhaps crepes are a bit different to true pancakes.

@JudyEv No tossing but enough food to feed a small village Seafood crepes are delicious! Crepes are the cousin to the pancake. And instead of piling goodies on top you put those yummy treats inside.

@dgobucks226 We say flat as an ironing board in several European countries, where pancakes are not really well known. Blodplättar is served in Finland, Estonia, Sweden and Norway, it is made of whipped blood, not pork, but typically reindeer blood. I had Johnnycakes in the Caribbean and they were a totally different thing, they are made with corn and not wheat.

i do love pancakes, I make them weekly for my kids for breakfast. They also love them. As a prediabetic now, my days of eating them weekly are over. I will take one on the rare occasion we go to IHOP but for the most part, I steer clear.

I understand being pre-diabetic requires some changes in the way you prepare and eat them. Using a sugar-free syrup is a must. Or perhaps even jelly/jam. Using fillings like cranberries, blueberries or strawberries can add healthier sugary flavors which can make eating them more enjoyable. Pancakes generally have less sugar in their batters than waffles. Additional Fun Pancake Facts: Did you know... -R. T. Its been over a month since I made pancakes. I should get busy since we have wheat flour handy. We often put peanut butter and molasses on our pancakes and if we have it, fresh applesauce.

Yes, cereal and oatmeal are my favorites during the week, and on weekends an omelet or pancakes/French toast.
