I Need Bananas for My Smoothies

United States
October 1, 2023 11:20pm CST
Every day at lunch if we are eating at home, I make myself a healthy smoothie. I start with almond milk and protein powder, then I add kale, either blueberries or strawberries, chia seeds and flax seeds, and sometimes I also throw in some raw spinach or 1/2 an avocado. But I always add either 1/2 or 1 whole banana. The banana makes the smoothies naturally sweet so I don't need to use any sweetener or honey. I couldn't find any organic bananas when I went grocery shopping on Wednesday. I have had banana-less smoothies for 5 days now and they just don't taste as good. I am going to pick up some bananas tomorrow. Do you drink smoothies? What do you put in them?

I used to make smoothies but now I stopped, as it was a lot of work in the morning and my mornings are always in a rush.

@nela13 I always make them for lunch or sometimes for dinner if I have had a big lunch. I know what you mean about mornings.

I'm not a big smoothie person but I can understand how the banana would make it naturally sweet. I always have bananas on hand and usually eat one a day.

@Marilynda1225 They are delicious in a smoothie or on their own, and also very nutritious as well.

I do drink smoothies, using lots of fruit and yogurt. I am out of bananas too. I think I will go to the store today. I was just thinking I would make a smoothie for lunch, maybe I will put protein powder in as a thickener since I don't have bananas. I take it you had good news on your mammogram?

@snowy22315 Yes, it was actually just today, and I just posted about it. Thanks for remembering and asking. I don't eat yogurt so I use 1/2 an avocado if I need to thicken it. I put protein powder in every smoothie I make. Chocolate, yum.

I make a very similar smoothie for my mom. I agree that banana is a key ingredient, and we only buy organic bananas too. Sometimes the banana is a little too green - perfect for eating for us, but not too sweet for a smoothie - so I will add a teeny bit of honey.

@Kouponkaren A ripe banana provides just the right amount of "sweet".

@much2say Yep, I do the same thing with honey. I do prefer the banana though. Sometimes I only use half a banana depending on how hungry I am.

NO, I never drink or prepare smoothies. We often share a banana with my husband, half each, one is too much.

@Kouponkaren A whole banana is a lot of calories and I also must avoid too much potassium.

@LadyDuck That's nice. Sometimes I eat a whole banana with peanut butter for breakfast.

@Ronrybs If I could eat yogurt I would use that. I am not supposed to eat it though. I do add almond milk yogurt once in a while.

I do not drink them often. I use what I have on hand. Never kale, that is not something I buy. I usually have them if I have overripe bananas and I do not want to make banana bread. You are right, they are a good natural sweetener.

Speaking of smoothies, I love strawberry flavor. My ex used to prepare this for me.

@Kouponkaren I would want to have some mangoes in it. It could be four seasons.
