Make Ends Meet

I am trying to make ends meet because I do not want to be in debt. That is the reason why I have never used credit cards in my entire life. As for me, it is a temptation to squander more than is required. I still remember a friend of mine who maxed out his credit card and overspent. When he lost his job, his mother was the one who paid for it. I felt bad for his mom to have this burden. Have you experienced this kind of situation before?

I have debt but I do not consider food expenses as frivolous nor is paying bills in that category. The problem is that where I live the cost of living is higher than what I make through social security.

You're probably right. I don't know much about other areas but it does seem that many retired folks are struggling.

@rebelann They truly are. I have a neighbor who had a lot of expenses due to being ill and having surgery. Endless trips to a specialist, etc. added up and she is truly struggling. I didn't know it was so bad for her--when she got home from the hospital, I made her a pot of soup and took it over to her. She was so grateful and said she would be having it for dinner. I found out several days later that the soup I made her was practically all she had in the house to eat. I didn't know what to do...I made her another meal and took it to her, but I didn't want to embarrass her--I just told her we had extra and knew she was still recovering. I snuck around and asked some other neighbors to ''gift'' her a get-well dinner or two...between us all we got her through it until she reached her payday. I fear there are many more like her, just sort of doing without basic necessities, like FOOD. So sad.

I think the cost of living everywhere is higher than anyone's social security. I am as frugal as I can possibly be. All we can do is the best we can do.

@Gilljane I was supposed to apply a credit card before. It just happened that my friend did this. So, I changed my mind and try my best not to work harder.

My sister has them, too. I think she can manage to use them wisely. If I really need it, I might only use the GCash credit.

I am also trying not to spend that much. I usually take my time to think and rethink before buying something.

@Shavkat - I am no more young, I only buy what I really need. I almost only buy food now.

@LadyDuck I am jealous that you do not need to worry about this thing. In time, I would want to be living comfortably.

Yes, when I was young, I overspent on a credit card. I don't have any credit cards now. If I can't save up the money to buy something, we don't buy it.

I think it is a good idea not to have it. It is a big temptation to overspend to certain things. There are some people trying to persuade me, but they never win.

@Shavkat Yup! You're right. The temptation is always there but we have to learn to just say "No.".

@DaddyEvil There is no problem for me to say no. Some cannot control themselves and give in without any second thought.

It's definitely not easy. I have spent a lot on credit cards in the past, and it's not something that's good.

I can feel you. At least you can control yourself now. Unlike the others that I know of, they still have this habitual problem.

I had credit card debt many years ago and it was a lesson I learned the hard way. It's never easy to pay credit card debt. You are smart to not get into debt with credit cards.

Thanks to my friend. He showed me the downside of having a credit card. Whenever I am thinking about it, the more I feel bad for his mom.
