A whole lot of bull

While on our way to take photos on the weekend, we passed a paddock with these two beautiful big Aberdeen Angus bulls standing in the corner. Once, most of the beef cattle that we saw were red-and-white Herefords but then the Aberdeen Angus breeders had an aggressive advertising campaign and next we knew, restaurants were selling Aberdeen steaks like they were going out of business. As a result, most of the paddocks now sport numbers of black cattle. But don’t they look magnificent?

That's strange because in the UK (home of the Aberdeen Angus, obviously) native breeds have largely been ousted by 'Continentals' - Charolais, Limousin and Belgian Blue. Glad they are popular over there!

@JudyEv Definitely too cold for Brahmans here! Aberdeen Angus are allegedly good-tempered and easy to handle. I wouldn't want to test it with those two though (although I guess just the fact that two of them are in the field together says something). I got chased by a bull once - a Hereford - when I was about 12. The bull was in a field and I was walking through on a public footpath. I had to dive through a barbed-wire fence into a patch of nettles. I had a long scar down my back for years afterwards!

@Fleura Wow! I'd never willingly go in a paddock with an unknown bull and there are not many bulls I know that I'd go in a paddock with either.

We have a lot of the continentals too but the British breeds came over with the early settlers so they've been well established here for longer. I don't think we have the Belgian Blues here yet but we have the other you mention and also Gelbvieh and Simmentals. Brahmans and Santa Gertrudis are popular in the tropical areas.

There is no way I'd be getting any closer. We were the other side of a strong fence.

They are massive. That's what kind had a bad attitude at the livestock auction earlier this month

@JudyEv Hereford bulls are often calm. But it is always good to be ready

@wolfgirl569 We never had any trouble with our Hereford bulls but the Friesian was a different story.

Jersey bulls have a very bad reputation too. I would be very wary around any bulls.

Yet if they put in a rodeo ring, they are incredibly agile and hard to ride.

I was waiting for one to paw up the dirt but they didn't bother. We were the other side of the gate obviously and only stopped long enough for a photo.

I guess when these have finished their stud duties they might end up as pet meat. They'd be tough eating I think even at this age.

They are buffed up bulls. I like the long horn steer some of our farmers around here have. Here's a picture of one of them

I've seen photos of these and there is one farm down south that breeds them but only for novelty value I think. Yours has a great set of horns.
