Ah, the change of seasons. As that meme says, the weather went from 80 to 45 like it saw a state trooper. While I pack away the shorts for vacation in Florida I’ll give you the penultimate song with “ain’t” in the title. Here’s someone you know…and a song you probably don’t. #2: Ain’t Even Done With the Night - John Cougar I always like to quote Weird Al’s April Fools Day MTV “guest VJ” appearance when he said, in a spoof of the “MTV News,” that John Cougar, who’d recently (1983) changed his stage name to “John Cougar Mellencamp,” would be adding a name with each subsequent album. “His next album will be as John Cougar Mellencamp Schwartz,” Weird Al said. Mellencamp is his name; however, record company execs didn’t think that was a “sexy rock” name. His first two albums were released as “Johnny Cougar,” then he went to “John Cougar.” With 1983’s Uh-Huh he added his given surname; then, with 1987’s the Lonesome Jubilee, went strictly to “John Mellencamp.” At this point, I think about poor JJ, who alphabetizes his albums by artist name (as most audiophiles do). Half his album collection is in “Cougar” and half in “Mellencamp”! Well, this came from his fourth album (a “Cougar” album, if you’re keeping track). It was a top 20 song, but you probably don’t remember it. In fact, you’re probably lucky if you hear his first hit, “I Need a Lover” anymore. That’s sad, because he had some good songs in those days. This particular song is my favorite Johnny/John Cougar/Cougar Mellencamp/Mellencamp song. I love the 50s vibe in it. Not to mention that you can probably listen to it quicker than you can get through the list of his stage names! Ain’t Even Done With the Night Written by John Mellencamp Recorded by John Cougar From Nothin’ Matters and What If It Did, 1980 And Sam Cooke’s singing on the radio:

Well, the sign on Interstate 65 near Seymour says “John Mellencamp.” Guess we’ll stick with that.

@FourWalls Hey, whatever works. Any of these guys can call themselves whatever they want, even if you can't pronounce it (the artist formerly known as Prince).

@LindaOHio — I went there three years ago. I’d have to see if the restraining order is still in effect.

I have to admit that I’m surprised that a lot of people remember this, because it rarely gets played in favor of “Pink Houses” or “Jack and Diane.”

I met this guy. Kind of. At a Richard Thompson concert in Bloomington Indiana. His drummer filled in because Thompson's drummer was ill. Nobody noticed.

I saw Richard Thompson in Bloomington, Indiana myself! Just solo, though. Kenny Aronoff is a monster of a drummer. Saw him play with the BoDeans (also in Bloomington).

@TheHorse — no, too recently for Thompson (2012) and too long ago for the BoDeans (1988).

I was a bit bemused by the outfits - and his jumper looks like something Vince would wear. Nice song though.

That’s the 80s view of what the 50s were like. Neil Young did a similar look in his “Wonderin’” video.

What's in a name, it's the music that counts and Johnny B Goode (there's another name he could go by) sure came up with some great tunes. And there ain't nothin wrong with this pick

How interesting. They are able to keep their usual names nowadays, aren't they?

I think the “we’ll change your name for you” days are over. I love the story of country singer Ferlin Husky…the record label thought that name was “hokey” (even though it was his real name), so they gave him a pseudonym of “Terry Preston.” His songs under that name bombed. He went back to his real name and became a superstar and a Country Music Hall of Fame inductee.

To paraphrase one of his biggest hits, Oh, well, life goes on long after the thrill of Mellencamp songs is gone.
