Remember when I told you kielbasa went up and I was going to have to forego buying it until the price improved? It went from $2.69 to $3.29 at Ruler, who currently has the cheapest price and I said. "Nope. Not paying that." I had one left in the freezer, added it to the list, and said, "Okay, start looking for sales." I thought I would have to wait longer. But lo and behold, Schnuck's suddenly put Ekrich Polska Kielbasa on sale for $1.99 each. I bought two. At the same time the best price for a loaf of bread right now is $1.49. Schnuck's had their bread on sale for $1.39. Saved another 10 cents. I also had spaghetti noodles on the list and the best price lately has been $1.25. Schnuck's had them on sale for 99 cents. I bought two. The bottom line is that so long as you know what you need and you know what your prices are, you have the best opportunity to take advantage of deals when you see them and never be forced to pay full price for anything, especially when the full price is higher than the last BEST price.

How many stores did you have to drive around to in order to find the good sale prices? And how much gas did you burn doing so? LOL I live right across the street from a Publix supermarket. Publix is known for its high prices, but I shop there anyway because I don't have to get out and drive anywhere. I just walk across the street. And, I only buy what's on sale or BOGO, so that's one of the ways I can keep my costs down and avoid paying their ridiculously high costs. Since I drive a truck, I know I'm saving money (or at least breaking even) by NOT driving around town to shop at other stores. In my city, Walmart clearly has the lowest grocery prices, but the nearest one to me is on the other side of town, and I absolutely hate stepping foot in that hell-hole. But honestly, if there was one conveniently located, I'd suck it up and shop there.

@porwest No, I’m definitely not headed to the poorhouse. And yes, I do have to double down on those things I am good at to compensate those areas I am not good at (grocery shopping and blowing money at Disney).

@porwest You are right about everything. I’m just lazy when it comes to grocery shopping. Lol. That’s the one area in my life where I don’t practice what I preach when it comes to spending/saving. I know, I’m bad.

@moffittjc lol. Just means you have to double down on the things you ARE good at. Based on our conversations, though, it doesn't sound like you are headed to the poor house...so... lol

I'm usually a bargain hound, as you know. But I don't like Ekrich brand.

@porwest Have you had Conecuh? Because if you had, Ekrich will be dissapointing.

I don't know that I have had Ekrich, so I am not sure. I hope it won't disappoint me.

That's right! I got 4 lbs. of sausage, locally made here today for on.y $6.99. It's normally 10.99-12.99.

@porwest I cringed the other day when I forgot to buy onions when I did my weekly shopping in next town over. I had to pick up an onion in town in our one little grocery store. That onion cost me $1.19 for a medium size onion!! Crazy!! A bag (that used to be $.99, was $5.99).

Great when we can find deals, especially now when deals are hard to come by, and even some deals are still more expensive than you would have paid a year ago.

@kareng It is rare I will pay the extra cost just because. But I will sometimes if it is a staple item. And onions pretty much are.

Sorry, I read that as Schmuck's at first . Yep - I pretty much grocery shop like that too . . . I go everywhere and if you really do some digging, you just might find what you need for a bargain. And sometimes an amazing bargain at that.

@porwest Well yah, you gotta know what you're buying. You're right that some of the clearance stuff isn't a deal . . . I learned some of that is stock that wasn't supposed to come to the store - and it won't scan on their system because it's not a part of it. So they try to make a buck - and can sometimes get away with making more. Baked goods that are marked down can be good - that stuff's gotta go!

@much2say For me it is not enough for it to be "on sale" or "on clearance," for me to consider anything a deal. I have to know it's a deal, because many aren't.

Good for you. People love to buy large quantities at Sam's Club, but I've always found better bargains buying Walmart brands at Walmart. Not everyone figures out the price per item. And Sam's has mostly brand names, but like many of the Walmart brand foods. I stopped at a Dollar General to pick up a loaf of bread and couldn't believe it was almost 4 or 5 dollars!

I was a Sam's Club member for a while, and I did find good deals. But found those deals were SO limited because they dealt so much in brand names, and I just don't buy brand names. So, even their best deal was not the best deal because I could always buy the generic equivalent cheaper. So we finally cancelled our membership. But $4 or $5 for a loaf of bread? That NUTS!

@porwest Our daughter shops at a Costco near them, but the closest one to us is two hours away.

@1creekgirl I had a short membership to Costco and they had many more generic options than Sam's Club ever offered. But the closes one was across the river in St. Louis about 30 minutes away and I just didn't feel it was worth the drive.

We go from having 4 items on the shopping list to 10 items in the shopping basket because of the reasons you state.

That CAN be a problem, but I guess a good problem to have for the right reasons. If I find a deal, I can't pass it up, and even if I am spending more on the trip, I'm still saving in the long run. lol

@JudyEv On occasion I MAY forego even a good deal admittedly. For example, if I already have 10 bottles of salad dressing in my pantry, I guess I don't need 5 more. lol

I try to plan my meals around sales lately. Sometimes, it's hard to get vegetables but if I find frozen on sale, I'll grab some. You got some good deals.

Right now I find, at least when it comes to frozen, Walmart typically has the best price on vegetables. So, I tend to get them there most of the time. Their fresh produce prices are atrocious, so usually Ruler is the place I get that sort of thing.

Are these the same brands that you usually buy? Sometimes when you buy only certain brands it's harder to find them on sale. And well said in your last paragraph. One thing though, how do you know what costs what where? Wouldn't you have to go from store to store to check on prices first before you finally decide where to get these things? Or do you have circulars to look at? We have circulars here for supermarkets, however, they don't put everything on sale in there. I guess too many items to include them all. Sometimes something is on sale and it's not in the circular. And you only realize it's on sale when you get to the store.

Me too. For me, shopping is something that requires quite a bit of patience, time, and research and PLANNING to save tons and tons of money. It's never a good deal because THEY say it is. It's only a good deal when I know what a good deal looks like and can pounce on it. Part of my fortune has been made by keeping as much of what I earn and have as possible, and making sure to keep what I have and earn is paramount. By the time something goes on my shopping list, I still have three or four left in the pantry or freezer, so I have time to find what I need at the price that best fits my objectives.

I thought about it. The limit was 3. But I can go back next week and get a couple more, and now that you mention it...I just might do that. $1.99 is the best price I have seen in a very long time for kielbasa. And we just LOVE it.

I always go for the best prices. So far Aldi has the lowest prices I've found, but Kroger has good sales at times. Between the two of them I usually find good prices.

@CarolDM All around I am pretty much a bricks and mortar guy. I buy some stuff on Amazon. But it's an extremely short list. I want to touch it, feel it AND want the best price, and I usually can't accomplish any of that if I go online. Plus, sometimes it's an excuse to get out of the house.

@porwest I only care about buying groceries in person. I make sure what I buy online can be returned. Took awhile to get here but now I enjoy having things shipped to my home.

It is rare I ever have just one of something in my pantry or freezer. Yep. If it's a deal I stock up and if I have enough, I have plenty of time to wait for the NEXT sale and continue to save even more money.

I just bought two bratwurst from a local butcher shop. The sausage was not cheap but it looked and tasted like someone local made them. Tasty.

You remind me of "the good old days when Mom and I went shopping and you could get TP four packs for around $1.50 at most. Now we pay over $14 for a 8 pack. My neighbor has taken to going to fast food places and stocking up on napkins to stretch her TP budget. She listens to me more when it comes to purchasing groceries too. I have some sort of inner radar where I know which store has what on sale. Today at the craft show we participated in, I was going to buy us both a hot dog. Nothing spectacular, just a hot dog. It was priced at $5.50 for a simple short hot dog on a bun. I passed on it. My friend and I went to a restaurant that had been reasonably priced a few months ago. Now a simple, single patty hamburger sells for $17.50 without fries etc. The whole meal would have been over $20+ each when we finished ordering. I buy my groceries when they are on special, and there are times when my freezer is stacked to the top. I also have noodles up the pantry, but I love noodles so that doesn't really matter. I am extremely careful about my beverage purchases, with 99% being bottled water that I consume for tea and drinking (the city water is horrible!!!! First thing in the morning it smells like a bottle of chlorine. I can't drink it, it stinks so bad. One needs to keep tabs on prices with the economy in the shape it's in! Go back for more of the kielbasa get as much as your freezer will allow.
