Getting electricity on the farm in 1956

Another milestone recorded in my mother’s 1956 diary was the installation of an electric light plant on the farm. February 28, 1956, the diary entry reads ‘Had lights at night’. On 29th February, Did ironing with electric iron. The plant had to be started if Mum wanted to wash or iron and the battery would only run the lights for a short time. Sometime a bit further into the diary, I’m sure I’ll come across an entry where a friend from Perth brought Mum her first washing machine. This really would have changed her life like nothing else. No more scrubbing and hand wringing of heavy, wet clothes. Just found it – March 3, the entry reads ’Eunie and Bill brought washing machine’ and it’s underlined. Bill rang a radio repair shop and also sold a few white goods. They had to cram the machine into the back of Bill’s tiny van. It was one of those that had a wringer. A red-letter day for Mum for sure. The photo shows four generations - my great grandmother, grandmother, mother and twin siblings.

The washing machine would have made a huge difference to her life. Our fridge would have still run on kerosene as we couldn't run the lighting plant all day just to keep the fridge going.

How lucky you are to have your Mom's diary. I have a very similar photo, my Mom, her mother, her grandmother and me in the arms of great grandmother.

I'm really pleased we have this record of the four generations. The diaries go from 1956 to 2005 with only a few missing. 1937 and 38 are there too.

We have pictures of mom and dad's parents but none with the full families together. (Dad's parents passed away when he was nine years old. Mom's parents lived hundreds of miles away and rarely had the money to come see us...) You have a very precious picture.

@DaddyEvil Us (relatively) younger ones have moved all over our states and the world now. And most of our kids wouldn't know too many of their cousins.

All of my parents' siblings stayed in the general area and didn't stray far until much later in life.

Shows how pampered we've become, I find it hard to imagine no electricity and all that goes with it

If you're without some sort of power - electricity, gas - today's home don't allow any options. There are few fireplaces or open fires so you're pretty well stuck until whatever the problem is is fixed.

@JudyEv We had a power cut a few months back and we all ended up outside with our torches chatting. I've had worse days!

@RebeccasFarm I can't imagine where they'd be really. I'm pretty sure my sister doesn't have them and, apart from her, there is only me.

It's been interesting to go back through the diaries. From 1956 to 2005, there are only a couple missing. I also have separate diaries (Mum and Dad) for 1937, the year they got married, and one for 1938.

The picture looks nice. A washing machine in 1956 was unimaginable in India. Your country was far ahead.

Thats great to know when it was installed. In 1970s, I remember that only a few residents have electricity, especially in my mom"s hometown.
