Half of Her Whiskers are Gone

We have a cat named Izzy. She is a sweet thing. My friend noticed that all the whiskers on one side of her face were gone.
We have no idea what happened to her. How does a cat lose half of her whiskers? We can see the little pores where they once were. She never goes outside. We can't figure out what happened.
Can anyone here give clues to this mystery? Will they grow back? What is the silliest thing that happened to one of your cats?

I have never heard of such a thing. I have had cats all my life and no lost whiskers but you might check this link,

Sometimes it comes from their selecting a different place to sleep. There might be something on the material that she is sleeping on that she might be allergic to, which will cause the loss of the whiskers. She and the other kitty might have been playing and the whiskers may have accidentally been pulled out.
I had a cat that lost the whiskers on one side of his face. He had selected to sleep under the gas water heater and for some reason they broke off. He wasn't burned from the water heater and the whiskers grew back. He too was a totally inside cat (I don't believe in letting my "kids" roam outside where they could get run over or otherwise hurt), so it was something that he reacted badly to. I also had a daughter who decided to play beautician with him and trim the whiskers off one side of his face. I had to explain to her that you don't trim a cat's whiskers or other parts of their fur. She felt bad about it after I explained the reasons to her, and she apologized to the cat and made him a beautiful bed to sleep on (he prefurred to sleep with her). The whiskers grew back in about 8 weeks, but he would tend to walk to one side (kind of a list) where the existing whiskers were still there until they grew back. It also could be allergies to something new to the house. But since your kids are inside kids you don't have quite as much to worry about then if they were allowed outside.

It is good to know that they can grow back. I will be checking to see if they are starting to grow back. She has little hidey holes that she likes to crawl into. She needs whiskers on both sides to be safe doing that. She sleeps wherever she wants, usually on my friend's bed.

They will grow back. My cousin's kitty got out and had never been outside before. She was frantic to find her kitty and he turned up at the shelter, she went to pick him up. One side of whiskers, gone completely. They weren't sure what had happened, of course, but they did grow back.

@MarieCoyle Yes, they do. The article said that the whiskers are the size of the cat. If the whiskers fit into a place they want to hide in, then they won't get stuck. It is important for them not to be trapped somewhere.

Do you have candles or other open flames? When I was a child we had open flame gas heaters in our bathrooms. It was very common for a kitty or two to burn off their whiskers on one side while enjoying the warmth.

I can't imagine. I hope the article will help. We've always had dogs. Have a good weekend.
