I can now walk to our supermarket

The photo is of the garden ornament I’ve ordered for my sister. I’ve taken the photo from their advertisement. I hope it’s not breaching some copyright code although I suspect it might be. Just over a week ago, a new supermarket opened within walking distance of our village. Everyone has been quite excited about this and today I was especially pleased to be able to walk there and buy some golden syrup. I was up early and ready to make biscuits and realised I didn’t have enough syrup for my needs. ‘Our’ IGA (Independent Grocers’ Association) is open from 7am to 9pm every day which is really good service. It took me just 20 minutes to walk there, get my products, chat for a few minutes to a friend and walk home.

That is a cute ornament and welcome sign. We have a little grocery store not far from us, it is so nice to be able to walk over when I need something quick.

I used to be able to walk to the grocery stores but since covid, my mobility has gotten worse. Not that I had covid, just that that's about how long ago I was able to walk the several miles there and back to the stores. Now, I either take the bus, which isn't all that convenient to the one plaza, or I wait until Juanita comes down. There's no grocery store in my immediate neighborhood.

@JudyEv That does sound good. A restaurant has recently reopened in my neighborhood but different management, different cuisine, doubt I could get fish and chips or an omelette there. We do have a medical centre here and some hairdressers and at least three pharmacies (not the mega kind though that sell a lot of other things). Since the hospital was decomisssioned five years prior to my moving here, a lot of the businesses closed up, then covid did in the restaurants/bars. Tim Hortons (coffee shop) stayed open because they have a drive-through window and managed to open a walk-up window during the shutdown. If a grocery store opened in this neighborhood it would be greatly appreciated by more than just me. Even a Dollarama would help as they do sell bread and some canned/dry foods. My mouth seems to be running off with my head... better feed them some breakfast.

This has only just opened but it will be highly used by the people in my village. There will also be a medical centre there, a chemist, possibly a hairdresser and maybe a restaurant. So it's all good.

Cute garden ornament! Oh how I miss being able to walk to the market from home (it was that way when we lived at the apartments). You get in exercise and grab some food supplies. Happy new market!

I know this is going to be just so handy. And yes, it's good motivation to go for a walk and get a few things each time so you don't have huge bags to lug home.

@much2say The hours are great too. 7 am to 9 pm. If you can't do your shopping within those hours, then you're not trying.

If I had a supermarket like that within walking distance I would have any day preferred offline rather than online shopping

That is wonderful. Maybe you could look to see if you'd benefit from one of those carriers that have 2 wheels so you can buy a bit more without having your arms full, I know I couldn't walk far if I had a load in my arms.

So far, we've gone each day and just bought a few things but we're looking at getting a carrier like you're suggesting. We have to be careful not to buy too much at once.

I love the little dog! That’s a good walk to the store and back, so you are definitely going to get your steps in! I drove a couple of teenage girls (15 and 16 year old sisters) from my apartment complex to the grocery store a couple of months ago, and it was about a ten minute drive. They told me they would be fine to walk home, and I kept asking them if they were sure. It finally dawned on me that at that age, making a thirty minute walk wouldn’t be that hard on them. They were in perfect health!

Supermarket in vicinity is always a plus. We too have one and sometimes the nearby ones help in some quick and urgent buys.

It will be a short walk to get anything that we night run out of. It is a very well-stocked store too and I can't think of anything that I'd need that isn't there.

This garden ornament is pretty and so much appropriate, the dog is exactly the same as the dog of your sister. I like to walk to our store, right now it's too cold, but when the weather is fine I enjoy the walk. The open from am to 9 pm is very convenient. Aldi and Lidl are those that open earlier at 7:30 am until 7:30 pm.

@JudyEv There used to be one in the city where I grew up. I don't know if it's still there. Mom sent me there all the time to pick up a few things. Though the store they used most was larger.

Nice you were able to walk to the store and love the garden ornament. That would be right up my wife's alley, I think. Funny you mention IGAs. I did not know they had those there. It is, of course, an American company although they operate in 41 countries. I guess Australia is one of those 41. We have several around here, mostly in the smaller towns.

@JudyEv Yeah. I am sure pretty much anyone is at least vaguely familiar with the stores. There's quite a few around. Usually a smaller store, at least here, and mostly in smaller towns where larger grocery stores don't locate.
