Question: Is it necessary to celebrate a birthday on a yearly basis?

Since it is my birthday tomorrow, I am posing this query. I'm not sure if I should make any food to celebrate. I'm growing older and no longer a child. I mean, why should I celebrate it? I have been celebrating it with my immediate family for a long time. If there is nothing on our table tomorrow, I have no doubt they will be surprised. Any opinions on that?

It's entirely up to us. At times, even a simple Tea and Cake can be enough I suppose. I feel it has become more of a norm but it wasn't always the case. I know of the previous generation who do not used to celebrate it on an yearly basis.

I agree with you. Some old folks lived in my country in the past. That is why they are trying their best to give their children the best chance.

@Shavkat That is fine but excessive thinking on that line is not always good. Yet people mostly go along with the prevailing trends more.

It all depends on where you live and how you live. If you are with family, perhaps a simple celebration is in order, especially if you are close to them. However, if you live alone, there is no need for this.

@Shavkat That is good to know because even if they appear uninterested, they will appreciate it if you celebrate it with them.

I would celebrate mine even should I be home alone. It depends how you feel about celebrating or not. Anyway, Happy Birthday to you.

I will just cook some meals for dinner with my immediate family. I told them not to invite others. I just want to celebrate it with them. Let's see later. There are always some people who tend to invite themselves without being invited. Thank you. It is another year for me to get older.

@Shavkat I feel that every time I celebrate, my age will decrease by one point and only being with my family is a special gift.

I also think that it is best not to celebrate it, so that I will not be reminded that another year has passed and made me older again.

I celebrate my birthday every single year. My husband takes me out to dinner and I either buy a cake or make one.

It has been a long time since we have celebrated birthdays in restaurants. It is because we have a lot of relatives.

I agree. I spent my birthday alone when I was on my medical mission in Tajikistan more than a decade ago. However, the organization's staff surprised me with a nice round cake in their office. I do not like surprises, but it made my day at that time.

You are unique. My personal belief is that you should be celebrated. Your existence should not be taken for granted. One of my brothers barely made it into the start of middle age. A person just never knows when there won't be more brithdays to celebrate. Go kick up your heels and enjoy you!

I guess I am almost influenced by some of my Chinese students who do not celebrate their birthdays. Now, I changed my mind and it will be celebrated tomorrow. I will just cook a few special meals for dinner.

Firstly, a very Happy birthday to you for tomorrow. Once you're an adult, birthdays aren't so important but it's still nice to celebrate the day. Your family might be disappointed if you ignore your birthday completely.

I agree with the disappointment part. So, I decided to have the celebration yesterday. I cannot say no to our kids at home. I still want them to feel the importance of it.

Another year of life is enough reason to celebrate. How you celebrate that is up to you. It doesn't always have to be about food.

Indeed. I did celebrate it with the family. I cannot resist myself not to have some meals and a cake for my birthday. The most important is celebrating with them.

My birthdays have always been low-key and within my immediate family. I celebrated my son's birthday along with his friends when he was young.

In my view, it is best to celebrate the birthdays of kids and elders. I just do not like having so many people lurking around the house. I am fine with my immediate family members only.

I changed my mind because my nieces are chanting the happy birthday song all day long. So, I managed to cook a few meals and bake a cake for dinner. But I made sure that it would be celebrated with the immediate family only.

When I was a kid I enjoyed birthdays. I don't care if I celebrate them anymore and only do it when I am forced to.

Things changed when my biological parents went to heaven. They were the ones who organized these things. Since they are not here anymore, we tend to pass on the tradition to the younger ones. I did celebrate it in a simple way.
