Our pension has increased

If the photo loads it’s off the quenda/bandicoot that I wrote about last time. I just received notification that there is a message in my MyGov mailbox. So of course you have to log in and answer a specific question, etc, etc but eventually I was able to download a PDF file which tells me that my pension has increased by $1.07 cents a fortnight. Now isn’t that a big deal? Vin’s pension will have increased by the same amount so we’ll be able to afford an extra ice-cream once a month.

I like the coloring on the quenda/bandicoot. Mike is getting a raise with his social security in Jan.. I'm still have a few years before I can collect, if it is still around.

That’s why I went ahead and took it at 62….will it be around when I’m 67?

@FourWalls Mike took it at 62 as well. I have 4 years to wait. Who knows what our country will look like in 4 years from now.

@FourWalls This money man suggests everyone take the money as early as you can. I won't go into the math of it. But you generally come out ahead if you do. So, it's a smart move. Granted, like with everything else, there are variables. But it's mostly a smart move.

That’s how I feel when I got a cost of living increase in my Social Security. Let me tell you, I live it up. What a great picture, by the way.

These increases are so small sometimes but they seem to think we should be incredibly grateful.

What does a fortnight mean? Once a month?

@Orson_Kart thanks so much for the info! So her pension definitely has changed but not by much. Better then nothing though

It’s what we brits (and other English speakers) use instead of 2 weeks. It’s a portmanteau of fourteen nights. Capeesh?

As Chris has said, a fortnight is two weeks. It's a very common saying here. It always surprises me when people don't know what it means.

I’m not sure how much $1.07 is in £ Sterling but I am guessing not much. Our state pension will go up next April by 8.5%. This equates to a monthly rise of about £75 for a full pension. This sounds like a lot more than you, based on number of extra ice creams you can buy with the increase. Here it equates to about 25 £3 ice creams. Of course if you want a flake in it, or extra toppings, that might drop it down to 20 or less. Still a lot more than you can afford. And here is me thinking life is idyllic in Oz. Not when you can’t afford 25 ice creams it’s not. I wonder how many Italian gelatos £25 can buy in Italy? @LadyDuck Anyway, Judy. Enjoy your ice cream. P.S. I am not quite at state pension age (66) so I have a year or so before I can even think of eating 25 extra ice creams. Until then I’ll just have to share in your pleasure.

@LadyDuck I should have known the plural of gelato wasn’t gelatos. Us brits just tend to put an s on the end of everything to pluralise it. Except words like genius. Of course us genii know what that is. I meant £75 of course, not £25. It was late when I made the post, that’s my excuse. Anyway, your gelati seems slightly more expensive than our ice creams. Which was pretty much the case the times I’ve visited. Worth it though.

I have no idea how many gelati (NOT gelatos) you can buy in Italy. Let me see £ 25 equal to 27.60 CHF (Swiss Francs). I would say 4 to 5 gelati in a nice cafe, or 8 large ice cream boxes in a grocery store.

I'm glad you can get an extra ice cream cone with your raise. I'm getting a raise too in my Social Security. I'll join you with an ice cream cone once a month. Is the bandicoot from the rodent family?

They are a marsupial (pouched animal) so it seems they're not classed as rodents.

The bandicoot looks like rats in our country. Is it some sort of rodent? Well, that's a very nominal increase, but I am sure that Vince and You would enjoy that icecream

It is one of our native animals. I guess maybe it's a rodent. We consider it one of the marsupials as it has a pouch.

Every individual gets a different amount here, depending on their assets, etc. We don't quite get a 'full' pension as, at the moment, we have too many assets/cash/etc.

@judyev Don’t spend it all in the one shop. Lucky me though, my state pension increases in April (though I don’t start receiving it till this January) from £812 a month to £863 a month.

My social security and pension both are increasing where one is an extra $49 and the other is an extra $39. The kicker, my insurances are increasing so I'll see about an extra $29 a month. Guess that can be looked at I can get a few extra days of vegetables. The president said it was to help the economy. Last year's increase was larger.

@JudyEv — wow. Ours is based on what we paid into it. There’s a 12% contribution (6% from “the company” and 6% from the individual), so while ours is individual as well, the cost-of-living increase is uniform.

Pensions here vary from person to person depending on your assets/cash in bank/etc. If we spent a huge amount, say, putting in new carpets, we could give them our new details and probably get a higher pension. They like to make it complex.
