Have you been to Washington D.C?

My best friend wants me to go with her to Washington D.C. in 2025, and I think the cost is the least of my problems with that. It sounds like a lot of walking, and I have trouble with that because of my car accident. I hate to say no because she is going on a trip in March with me, and I had suggested it. The cost isn’t a huge concern for me because she lined up a place for us to stay for free, and that’s usually the biggest use of money. But, quite frankly, Washington D.C. doesn’t sound all that fun to me. What has been your experience? Would you even want to go?

On a trip in general with a friend I would want to go...but to Washington D.C. specifically? It doesn't sound very fun to me either.

I'd be interested for historical reasons, but otherwise I don't know.

As a fellow Viringin, I can tell you about DC. Yes, it is a walking place you can drive there are lots of places in DC to drive to and park but a lot of times you have to pay for parking. There is also the metro which can talk you around DC again something you have to pay for if you're not walking but some places in DC are far apart and walking takes a while and driving takes a while due to traffic and around March is when the Cherry blooms happen and they are pretty to see in person. A lot of people who live in and around DC take the metro. They arrange where they want to go within DC and that way you know what stop to make and your walking areas. We don't go to often and when we do it's usually to the main part of the city known for a lot of things. Like the Zoo, the museum, the Mall (that is the big outside part around the reflection pool."

You make it sound very appealing, which if I weren’t so intimidated by the walking, I imagine I’d think it was already, hands down.

@AmbiePam Walking isn't bad. It just depends on how much walking you do or do not want to do. There is also rent scooters and bikes that help you get around. There is stuff outside of DC that is just as nice and you do have to drive to them but you don't have to walk a lot. Virginia is the Lover state so we have a lot of nature stuff. with trails some trails are supper short and have sitting or camping areas. There are a lot of old war spots, there beach, a lack of anna, and farms (where you can do picking, and yes they drive you to them so you don't walk to the picking area.) Tones of winners, lots of museums ones in which you can stay the whole day and not see another one, they will have cafeterias, elevators, lots of places to sit or hand out. Some people just visit DC and the Mall for certain Events where you can camp out on the lawn and see whatever is there that day. There is a food convention, the Cherry Blooms festival, an international day with food, people playing soccer or things like chess, and so on. My daughter went at the end of November and they did the Spy Museum and then a small Smithsonian (we call that the Red Castle) and the African Art Musum

@ShyBear88 I need to show your response to my friend because she would love to do the nature things you are mentioning as well.

I’ve always wanted to go. I know it is super expensive, but my daddy said that it was a must see. He loved museums and historical things. I do too.

@AmbiePam I guess it is what you want to get out of a trip. I was a lot younger when I was there and I love to walk around. I loved Washington D.C. and the Smithsonian Institute. I saw some amazing things there and if you really do not want to go and it is very hard for you to walk then you have to tell her you cannot. You have to take care of yourself and your health and body and no one else is going to do it for you. Where are you going on your trip in March? Will there be a lot of walking. I hope it is a sunny place if you want you can sit and rest and not have to do a lot of walking.

You’re right, of course. I just hate feeling like I’m letting her down. In March, we’re just going to Branson, Missouri. I’ve been many times, so I know there are plenty of places to rest. We’re going to see shows, visit museums, see the underground caverns, and take a train ride through the Ozarks. Plus, it will be March, and not hot at all. I’m a wimp who was born with an intolerance to heat. Which is hilarious because I live in Oklahoma.

@Hannihar June to October, sometimes May to October it is unbearably hot. Plus, April to September is prime tornado season (although we have had tornadoes even in December). The humidity puts it all over the top. Boy, do I know how to complain! It could be worse; I could live in Louisiana or Mississippi, which has way worse heat and humidity than Oklahoma. So you are getting a lot of rain right now?

@AmbiePam Does it get really hot in the summertime in Oklahoma? I am glad you found a place to visit that you like and not everyone likes hot weather. It does not bother me unless it gets to be too hot and it can get that here with no rain and the sun shines all the time in nice weather. We have the rainy season in winter only but at times it has rained in nice weather because the weather has been screwy these last years. I have never been to Oklahoma and do not know about the weather there.

Yes, many times. DC is a beautiful city. I think everyone should go at least once. Make sure to go to Arlington Cemetery.

My parents, sister and I visited Washington DC in the early 80s when Ronald Reagan was President. That was way before 9/11 , and the actual White House was open for tours with a tour guide. It was very rewarding to visit. The Lincoln Memorial was cool to see. We also saw where money was made.

I have not been to too many places in your country. I have not even visited our capital, Ottawa. I understand your concern about the walking. I am looking at places to go to for the summer. We want something laid back, and that offers different activities at the resort. We are on the hunt for resorts that offer cottage rentals, that way we can make our own meals and save some and even have our son and his family come along for a bit of the time we are away.

That sounds ideal. I have a lot of pictures in my head on what that would look like in Canada.

@AmbiePam We gravitate towards Ontario's west coast, which is along Lake Huron. It is a large and deep lake, and the air off of the lake is very cooling. We like quiet areas near the water, but the girls being so young and so quick, we are finding it interesting to find a safe family resort.

I have been there with my husband. He had meetings all the time, so I visited the city all alone using their underground trains. I am not sure I would like to visit alone, it seems it has become a dangerous city.

Yes, from everything I have heard, you are right. Of course, the real danger is at night, like a lot of places, and I’m not setting foot outside at night.

@AmbiePam - I felt safe almost all the time, except one time that, while walking, I found myself in an area of the city that did not look at all safe.

I went years ago with Dale, our daughter and two grandsons. We enjoyed it. Of course I was sick with a UTI and at one point the oldest grandson rode in a cab with me to go back to our room. I'm sorry I missed going to Arlington National Cemetery, but the Smithsonian was interesting. I don't want to encourage you either way, but if you go, please, please be careful and safe.

As interesting as a trip to Washington DC might be I think you're right about all the walking and any sightseeing there's stairs involved too. Maybe you could rent a scooter while you're there and it would make it much easier for you to get around. The only time I was in Washington DC was on my high school senior trip (a zillion years ago). The trip was fun but I barely remember anything about Washington

To see the memorials especially the Vietnam one was alright. Historically perhaps but really exciting probably not for most people.

It's pretty irrelevant now but I'm afraid we wouldn't even want to go to America. Even our east coast is beset with floods and fires so we're thinking we might just stay home a bit longer.

Definitely lots of walking. Go to the Smithsonian if you go. It depends on what you have an interest in if it's fun. There's a lot of history there. I was there when I was quite young.
