My checks were not stolen!

The checks from my bank arrived the other day! The previous batch had been stolen from my mailbox. Now I can pay my rent, and a couple of other bills, by check again. I had literally run out. Do you still use checks to pay for anything?

Not anymore. I still keep my checkbook handy, but I won't write them. Last time I had a check written for me, was when we made the final mortage payment on our house five years ago.

@kaylachan I get cash back. No "points" I don't understand and will never use.

I seldom use checks, but have to sometimes. Glad you received yours. A friend sent us a Christmas card with a check in it, but it was damaged by the post office. She later received it since it had her name and address on it. We received it the next time.

I have to use checks to pay my rent. For some reason, each regime at my apartment complex requires paying for rent one of three different ways (electronically, money order, or check). Right now, this regime is calling for checks, which I don’t mind as long as they give me a receipt. I had one inept regime that asked for checks, then literally sent late notices to 75% of us claiming we never paid. They not only made us show our receipts, but had to go to our banks to get pictures of our rent checks. But at least I’m not bitter.

That is awful that your cheques were stolen, I hope that you contacted the bank and put stop payments on those cheque numbers. We rarely use cheques, in fact the last cheque that we gave was actually a certified cheque, that I had to go into the bank to have made out as it was for the SUV that we bought last year. A personal cheque isn't suffice for that. Here there are so many ways of paying someone, pre-authorized debit payments set up to automatically come out of your account, debit card payments, and e-transfer payments, which are my personal favorite.

I had to do that to pay my rent this month, even though it would not normally be necessary. "...certified cheque, that I had to go into the bank to have made out as it was for the SUV..."

No, we do not use checks from several years. We pay everything through Bank transfer. I do it online, it's more convenient.

Chase sells a sheet of 3 checks for $2. I keep one or two of them on hand but I don't have a whole checkbook.

I get my checks for nothing. If I am careful. The third-party provider will "getcha" if you don't check all of the right boxes.

I have checks available for when online bill pay (of any sort) is not working, or I'm giving money to someone older who is afraid of debit cards.

I either pay via my debit card or with money orders. With the money orders I have receipts that prove that the amount had been paid and eliminates any fight I might have with the bank and the person receiving the money order. Plus if the money order might be lost or stolen I can contact the issuer and they instantly put a stop payment on the M.O. and issue me a refund. I don't like having to pay for the checks, bank statements and other things that the banks dream up that go with a bank account.

I have a fairly large ($4,000) check stolen from my mailbox. It was deposited successfully by the criminal. I was eventually "made whole," but it was a lot of work, and the criminal was never caught, so far as I know.

D For me l like using the cash for paying almost everything. I sometimes use the mobile money payment for clearing my electricity, airtime, internet and the household shopping.

Now we rarely use Checks (Cheques) here. Did you file any police complaint for the Stolen checks? It is very serious matter. Yet as the saying goes "All is well that ends well."

The last three cheques we wrote were all for annual subscriptions for Donnybrook Golf Club as they didn't take credit cards. So after using only three cheques in three years we decided we probably didn't need a cheque account any more.

I'm glad you received your checks. I pay most of the bills through the bank; but I still use checks for doctor co-pays and our housekeeper. Have a good week.
