She doesn’t want to be tall.

Amyra, my niece, is 12 years old, and five feet tall. When I was her age, I was 5’11. She’s concerned when she grows up she’ll be too tall, and asked my sister how tall her birth parents are (bio mom is 5’5; father’s identity is unknown). I don’t think five feet is tall for a 12 year old at all. She used to tell me she wanted to be as tall as me, but I think her current crush is shorter than her, and that bothers her crush. I told her boys mature later than girls, so not to concern herself with that too much. I hated being tall, mostly because I was constantly mistaken for the teacher, and also MY crush was way shorter than my 5’11 at age twelve. Were you happy with yourself at that age? Is ANYONE happy with themselves at that age?

Great picture. I was happy with myself in my late teens and early 20s. I was thin and pretty with long dark hair. Now I'm old and fat! Have a good weekend.

Amyra is beautiful. I wouldn't want to be 12 again nor would I want to go through those awkward teenage years. I think most of us have gone through what she's going through and if it isn't height it's something else.

I never minded being tall. But one of my cousins hated her height even though she was shorter than me. She told me once that she was taller and I had to take her to the bathroom mirror and tell her to stand up straight with me at her side to tell her that she was wrong.

I do not remember at all if I was happy with myself at the age of 12. I remember my first crush, he did not last long.

Being 12 is a hard age. You are on the verge of being a real teenager, but you don't feel like a little kid anymore, either. You want to be an adult, but you like to play dolls with a little sister sometimes. There are just so many things, trying to discover what you like, who you are, and how you feel about things. She will go back and forth. I'm not tall, and always wished that I was!

I am thinking that at that age I was 4'11" but I am not sure where that memory is coming from. I do not think I was ever real happy with myself until my senior year and the two years I was in college.

It is pretty hard to remember what I was thinking about when yI was 12, other than I knew I wanted a boyfriend.

I remember feeling like I had THE biggest feet of anyone in my classroom at her age. I could no longer wear children's shoes and was in women's shoes. But my Gramma used to remind me that God loved me enough to give me a good (and big) foundation and here feet were big too, she wore a size 11 I believe. You just remember to remind her lovingly, that what really counts is the beauty from her soul that radiates from her big beautiful eyes and her smile. That is what I see when I look at a picture of her. I see a warm and loving smile, that cannot be measured in height can it?

At age 12 I reached my adult height of 5 ft 7 1/2 inches. I was the tallest girl in class. It didn’t bother me. I was shorter then my parents and siblings.

@ambiepam My cousin is 6 foot tall. At school she had a sore back which was diagnosed as “tall girl’s stoop” - she was self conscious because of her height so compensated by slouching.

I'm sure the boys will overtake her in no time, unfortunately. I would love to be taller. I used to be average height but now I'm below average (people have got taller since I was 12)

I used to be tall too at that age. But after highschool my growth stopped and I seem to appear short. Your niece is beautiful.

It's true that boys take time to mature and once they do they are taller than you can expect. I was happy with my height although I always wanted to be shorter than my mom. I wanted to always feel like a kid.

Wow, Amyra is pretty much my height! I was ALWAYS the shorty . . . I didn't like being the shortest for the longest time, probably because I was constantly teased about it. But at some point I got over it and was ok with it (probably because I stopped growing and didn't have a choice ).

I was the shortest in the class but I suddenly started growing when I was around sixteen and yes I am happy with my height. 5'11" is too tall for a girl atleast here in India. How tall are you now?

I am the same height. I quit growing at age 12. My dad was 6 ft. and my mom 5’8, so either my sister or me was bound to end up tall. It turned out to be me, and my sister is 5’6.

No, I hated being skinny and wearing glasses. The cutest boy in my 7th grade class liked me and gave me my first kiss. I never could understand what he saw in me.

I think you answered that question yourself in your very last line! haha. I know I wasn't happy with myself when I was 12 years old, because I was a fat butterball. Then puberty hit, my metabolism kicked in, and I lost tons of weight and shot up in height, so that by the time I turned 13, I was tall and skinny. In my freshman year of high school, my gym teacher told me I should try out for the basketball team because I was tall, I had never played before, had no idea what I was doing, but had that ultra competitive spirit in me. I made the varsity team as a freshman (we were a brand-new school at the time). I had no idea what I was doing, and it showed. In our first season, we didn't win a single game. In our second season, I think we only won 2-3 games, but in my junior and senior years we won all our games and made it to the state finals both years. Not bad for a kid who started out as a short, fat butterball. lol

@AmbiePam You've already mentioned it to her, but reiterate to your niece that she should have nothing to worry about with the tallness factor. Like you said, boys mature later than girls, so in a few years all those boys she likes will shoot up in height and she'll have nothing to worry about.

I enjoyed your writing of this reflective sweet story about your time with your niece. She'll do great and mighty things, like her aunt and mom. I think I was okay with my height growing up. I got stuck at good 5 '2"

At 5’2, you must look younger than you really are. That can come in handy sometimes.
