I decided to start an interesting series. This will take a while as there are 195 countries in the world. First up is Afghanistan. Afghanistan's official name is the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. It's capital is Kabul. Afghanistan is a landlocked country with Pakistan to the southeast, Iran to the west, Turkmenistan to the northwest, Uzbekistan to the north, Tajikistan to the northeast, and China to the northeast and east. The official language of Afghanistan is Pasho - Dari. There are eight ethnic groups of which Pashtun is the greatest with 42% of the population. Islam is the major religion comprising 99% of the population. Afghanistan's government is Unitary - totalitarian; provisional - theocratic; Islamic - Emirate. Afghanistan has no legislature. Afghanistan went through fifteen kingdoms. The Restoration of Islamic Emirate gained control in 2021. Afghanistan covers 652,864 square kms or 252,072 square miles of mostly mountainous terrain. As of 2021, Afghanistan had a population of 40.2 million. This is just a brief look at Afghanistan. The next country in alphabetical order is Albania. Do you know anything about the history of Afghanistan? Thanks for reading. Image courtesy of Pixabay. Afghanistan flag map.

I know that right now Afghanistan has no legislature. It was dissolved when the Taliban regained control of the country on 15 August 2021. Back in time, Buddhism was one of the major religious influences in Afghanistan during the pre-Islamic era. It could be a rich country if someone went there to help them to extract the minerals they have in large abundance, like copper, lithium, talc, marble, gold, uranium. Afghanistan's vast mineral wealth is estimated to exceed one trillion dollars.

Good share! Do you know that as per the area still claimed by India and under the Pakistan occupation, there is an area named Wakhan corridor of Afghanistan that borders India. Kandhar was earlier named Gandhar which was a big political power centre during Ancient Indian time. It was culturally same as rest of Northern India and had a special significance in the epic Mahabharata (Check out characters Shakuni and her sister Gandhari). Afganistan had a big influence of Buddhism for a good time as well. Whatever be the religion, Afghani folks are proud people who don't allow Foreign invaders or occupiers to stay much. Britishers could only occupy a part of it and for a few decades only. Afghanistan had its stint with Modern Western style living under Najibullah and a few other kings before him but after Russian withdrawal in 1989, the country has again been in a turmoil. It became a terror epicenter and saw the rise of Al Qaida. Rest is well documented and known about 9/11 and Osama Bin Laden. Recently, the Afghanistan cricket team has performed really well in Cricket World Cup 2023. The Taliban rulers though need to lift restrictions on Women education, movement and take cue from the Islamic republics of UAE and Saudi Arabia and modernize.

@just4him Yes. I also read a lot about the USSR's fight with the Mujahideens supported by US. That is a big topic by itself.

Afghanistan sure has a lot of neighbours. That accounts for some of the unrest there, I guess.

It has always been in the news mostly for the wrong reasons. They need to look ahead to have hope for a better future.

@Shiva49 Not until the Taliban looks like towards UAE, Qatar or Saudi Arabia and look towards modern thoughts while also keeping their heritage and religious practices intact. Under them, their relationship with India too is dicey unlike the improvements we saw during Hamid Karzai and Ashraf Ghani.

I could have gone into the history, but it's involved with having 15 different governments in its time which was from the paleolithic era.
