I am in pain right now.

What the hell am I doing up at 4:35 AM? No, I did not have to pee. I had a leg cramp. Do you ever get leg cramps while you're sleeping? I get them about once a week. I generally eat some salt, drink some water or Gatorade, and walk (more like shuffle) around my place until it goes away. OK, it's finally starting to abate. I will head back to bed soon. Older musicians also complain of hand cramps, especially when playing in the hot sun. Have you ever had those? I did not get any hand cramps at today, practice, even though I was drinking beer, not Gatorade. Kitty is running around, traying to get my attention. We already did a purr fest earlier in the night. Wish me luck getting back to sleep.

I do not get leg cramps often, but when it happens I extend my leg and pull my foot towards me. Keep for a few seconds and the pain disappear.

@Beestring It is the only method that works. Getting up and walking often worsens the pain.

Oh, the old Charley horse. I’ll tell you what my massage therapist told me, that seems to work in alleviating them: point your foot in the direction of the pain. If it’s going down your leg, point your foot down, and if it’s going up your leg, point your foot up. Bananas are also reportedly great for Charley horses (to keep them away, not help more show up…).

@LadyDuck — just shows you how unique we all are. Most people are told to increase potassium to reduce the cramps.

The method your therapist told you is the only one that works for me. Weird, I get leg crampy IF I eat bananas.

@May2k8 That is a good idea. I once followed this routine for a few days and it helped me in coping up with strains when walking long distances.

Reading the comments to this post made me eat some salt just now. I will also drink some fluids (other than vodka ) before I go to bed.

Hope you were able to get back to sleep. Drinking pickle juice relieves leg cranps.I am a graphic designer so I get hand cramps often from using the mouse on my computer for extended periods of time. I also have a trigger finger that locks in place sometimes and I have to snap it back.

Waking up at such a time when one has not completed his or her sleep can be so challenging. Good that the pain went away. Were you overdoing things physically during some of the last few days?

I hope you got back to sleep. I rarely get leg cramps. My husband was another story he got them during the night. Our funniest episode happened while we had our girl cat Cha Cha. During the night she found different places to sleep and you had to be careful if you got out of the bed at night. My husband had a leg cramp and he tried to stand up but slid and fell to the floor. He kicked out with one foot and wound up kicking Cha Cha in the cheek. She had a puffed up face for a while but otherwise was OK and they both survived,

I haven't had a leg cramp in years. When I did, I would jump out of bed and immediately stand on that foot. That usually stopped the cramp in its tracks. I rarely get cramps in my hands...just arthritic stiffness and pain. Hope you and KItty have a good day.

Good luck. I get them fairly often, because I am old. Once a doctor told me to drink original V8, Hubby and I find it effective. I have been known to take a swig or two of pickle juice. My hands hurt and have cramps. I have carpal tunnel, arthritis, etc. Had bad muscle cramps night before last.

Check your calcium, vitamin D 3 ... I doubt if it is those in your case because you like milk products and are an outdoor person. B complex, Vitamin K, and Vitamin E can also give such issues. My cramps are related to calcium, primarily because of lactose intolerance, and I do forget to take my tablets more often than not. But they are not as frequent as yours. I did get a very bad bout of it once while driving. I stopped the car and waited. That is another reason I no longer drive.
