Exercising in the office

We spoke to our son in Ireland last night. He now has a desk job and has now bought himself a ‘standing desk’. And he also bought a treadmill which he has in front of the desk. If he is on the phone, just pushing buttons or on his lunch break, he can do some ‘walking’ at the same time. This is all good but his next remark was surprising although I guess it shouldn’t have been. He said it’s hard to get any exercise in winter as the days are so short and the weather often bad. Where I live, it’s very rarely that a person couldn’t get out to go for a walk because of the weather conditions. So many differences in this crazy world of ours. The photo is from Ireland of canal boats tied up on the canal.

In winter it happens that for days we cannot go out walking because of the weather conditions. We only could walk yesterday for about 2 hours during the past 10 days.

@JudyEv It is a very good idea. Yesterday we parked the car in the covered parking and we walked in the Mall.

@LadyDuck We are trying to do more walking nowadays. We do too much sitting down.

That is what our son says so I guess this is a good idea for him.

@jstory07 Our other son turned 52 in February. It's hard to realise they are this age.

He turns 50 in August so is probably starting to think he is getting old.

I know you sometimes say you won't need to go outside and you're pleased about it.

The weather differs a lot from region to region. I have never lived in wintry conditions.

I've never had to live with snow and ice. It would be a totally new experience for me.

They are possibly quite new. I guess they'd be okay once you got used to them.

@thelme55 Humans seem to get busier and busier with less and less time so now people are trying to exercise while they're working.

I love the photo as always. Yes Ireland gets dark so early as I recall. Good your son is getting his steps in. So now he has the job along with his musician work.

He doesn't play many gigs any more. His job keeps him really busy. I love the long twilights when we were there but we didn't get to experience the really short days.

We had a wonderful four days on one of these boats - four berth - Vince, myself, our son and his double bass on the other bed.

@JudyEv that's a real shame. Were the requirements really that onerous that they had to shut down?

@JudyEv No I didn't know about the cattle, what did they do? Switch to other systems or just give up? In the UK now there's the big switchover from the EU farming grants to some other system. In Wales the government wants farmers to devote 10% of their land to trees (it isn't clear whether they can count existing trees or if it means planting new trees). Under the old EU system trees were specifically excluded, even if it was just a large tree in a hedge overhanging a field, if trees covered too much of the land 'parcel' in aerial photographs that could not be counted. So it's a complete change. Meanwhile in countries that have recently joined the EU of course they are all chopping down their ancient woods and ripping out hedges to comply

When Ireland joined the EU, they couldn't meet all the safety requirements for the boats and they don't run any more. We spent four days on one quite some years ago.

I doubt I could work very well with a standing desk. Your son is smart thought to add some exercise to his working hours.

I know what he means. When you have to leave home in the morning and it's still dark, and it's dark before you leave work in the afternoon, it doesn't inspire you to go outside, unless you are lucky enough to be able to walk or cycle to/from work. Or maybe do something at lunch time.

As I said I was surprised at first but I can see his reasoning. The road past his house wouldn't be very user-friendly in the dark either.

It's good that he is doing that. It is said that just sitting all day in an office is very unhealthy for us. But with the option of sitting or standing, and also the treadmill, he will not have to worry about keeping his body toned. Good for him!

I think it is a good idea. I think if I had a knotty problem to solve, I'd forget to keep walking and fall flat on my face.

@MarieCoyle I used to go for a ride on my pony. I'd head out with something on my mind but an hour or two in the bush on horseback always helped to clear my thinking.

@JudyEv When I am deep thinking, I often have to do something--cook, sew, walk, whatever. It helps me to figure it all out somehow.

I hope the standing desk works out for him. The weather here has been nuts. It will be warming up this weekend. Have a great weekend.
