Total Embarrassment

On Friday night, my daughter and girlfriend wanted to go to the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Regional Championships held at the University of Florida. I thought it would be a fun time, so off we went. Considering it was a last-minute decision to go, and we weren't even sure if there would be tickets left to the event (the UF women's gymnastics team has sold out every home meet since 2013), we were surprised that there were three seats together in the center of the arena close to the floor. The event was great, and tense competition ensued among the four teams completing. In between the team rotations, the announcers had fun with and engaged the audience to keep things light and fun. During the first interlude, they did a segment called "Awkward Dad Dance Cam," in which the television cameras scanned the audience and zoomed in on various dad's dancing to the Village People's song YMCA. Of course, who gets singled out by the cameras? Yep, me. I did my best to dance along to YMCA, all while it was being projected on the Jumbotron screen for the entire arena to see (all 10,000 people in attendance). Yep, totally embarrassing, because this guy can't dance to save his life! But wait...it gets better. Towards the end of the evening, during another break, they did one called "Air Guitar Segment" in which the television scanned the audience and zeroed in on people pretending to play the guitar to AC/DC's song Back In Black. Once again, the cameras focused on me jamming out to AC/DC. I loved it, but I think I totally embarrassed my daughter and girlfriend (who--because of sitting on either side of me--were also shown on the big Jumbotron screens). But who cares, I had a blast. And even better, the University of Florida's gymnastics team (my alma mater) won the event and will continue on towards winning a national championship. Overall, it was a great night and a fun time. Would you have gotten up and danced or played air guitar in a large stadium or arena if the television cameras zoomed in on you for a closeup and projected it on the big screens for the whole world to see? The photo has nothing to do with the discussion, but it's a topiary of Goofy blowing a dandelion at the Flower and Garden Festival at Epcot at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. I've often been told that Goofy and I are one and the same.

I wouldn't care that much. People forget about it 5 minutes after it happens anyway.

Exactly. That was my thought as well. I was one of about 15 people the cameras projected up on the Jumbotron. The only lasting repercussions were that several people I knew who were also at the meet texted me that they saw me on the Jumbotron. Big deal. I had fun being that embarrassing dad.

@snowy22315 Of course, it is my life mission to embarrass my kids. But I must do it often, because it doesn't even phase them anymore. They would just nonchalantly say, "Yep, that's my dad." My daughter was telling me that she was thinking of having a SpongeBob Squarepants themed party for her 25th birthday in October. I told her to pick out which character she thought I would be best at, and that I would go all out with it, costume, antics and all. I will totally be in character at her party and embarrassing her to no end.

@wolfgirl569 Exactly! I'm in my mid-50s now, so I only have 50 more years to enjoy life to the fullest. And yes, I'm being optimistic that I'm going to live to be a hundred and five!

Oh my I wish I would have seen that!! How about them Tigers?? Eh? So proud of them! Great team this year and the coach that replaced DD has been awesome! Can't believe OK didn't make the finals!! It was all up in the air after that! I really wanted to go to Ft. Worth for the Championships but my homebody hubby refused. I think next year I'll get my oldest daughter (the one that used to be a gymnast) and we will have a road trip. But you just wait--there will be a new site and it will be far away from me!

Congratulations to LSU on their gymnastics national championship! I didn't have any expectations for the Gators to win, but I was extremely disappointed in their 4th place finish. But that's neither here nor there, LSU deserves the win they got!

@RebeccasFarm I wonder if they keep a copy of those live feeds they put up on the Jumbotron boards? I wonder how I could find out. I think it would be pretty funny to get a copy of me embarrassing myself and post it on Facebook for the whole world to see.

@LadyDuck I'm naturally shy myself, but over the course of my career in public service I had to learn to be social and outgoing. I can be very outgoing when I need to be, it's like flipping a switch inside my brain. But whenever I switch to outgoing and social mode, I am always emotionally/mentally drained afterward.

@TheHorse Reminds me of some of the crazy things I have seen on the subway trains of New York. You’d probably fit right in there.

@moffittjc I have been known to be a bit goofy even when not imbibing. Singing harmony vocals with friends on BART trains is in my repertoire.

When I was younger I might not have, but as I have aged I have loosened up. I sang onstage at an educators convention with Miss Jackie, a prolific creator of children's music and literature. I know I have done other things but they just left my mind. I just told myself they are all strangers and will never see me again.

I was similar to you as you described, but with public speaking. When I was younger, I was terrified of public speaking; now I love it. And the bigger the crowd, the more I enjoy talking in front of people. Like you said, for the most part people will not see you again. I always look at it this way: most people are terrified of being in front of people, whether it's for a performance or a public speech, so they admire you for getting up there and doing something like that. And people in an audience are secretly cheering you on, because they want you to do well up in front of the audience.

I think that is great Jeff. You'll likely be receiving calls soon to be a back up dancer for some great performers, and we can all say that we knew you when............... I was on the big jumbotron once at Ford Field. It was at a pre-season night game. I was THE only one not wearing their Hawaiian blue and I was THE only one yawning. Go figure.

Judy, somehow--even though I've never met you in person--I think you would go along with the fun and get up and dance in your seat or play along on the air guitar! The floral display is beautiful, isn't it? Disney World goes all out during their Flower and Garden Festival; the entire theme park is covered with beautiful floral arrangements like the one on the photo. The colors on display are absolutely amazing.

A lot of times, if I know the cameras will be panning the crowd to look for people to put on the Jumbotron, I'll make myself scarce or turn my position in my seat so as not to have a good camera angle.

I was actually surprised, because that's normally how my daughter would be. But she didn't shy away from the camera when she saw herself next to me on the Jumbotron screen. She just laughed and pointed at me.

Having a lot of fun with your daughter and your sweetie, laughing, dancing, playing a pretend guitar?? We don’t laugh enough. We don’t have fun as much as we should, and many people don’t ever make the effort to ever have fun and smile. You had fun!! You made memories with your family!! Absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about. Don’t ever change that attitude. You’re doing just fine. happy.gif" />

Thanks. I'm usually one who tries to avoid the limelight. Unless I've been drinking of course, then all bets are out the window. And no, I wasn't drinking last night. Just having lots of Friday night fun. I'm all about having a great fun-loving attitude, but usually I try to keep it within my inner circle of family and friends, no broadcast on giant tv screens for the whole world to see!

@moffittjc So, you let loose in a good and fun way! Some day when you’re older and maybe not able to be that active, your daughter will look back on that and remind you what a fantastic evening you had being goofy!! No harm done, and lots of good memories and laughter.
