The soup night is over

We attended a ‘soup night’ at our clubhouse on Friday. There were about 125 people and the social committee had put a lot of thought into the logistics of serving so many. We had a choice of four soups – chicken and corn, Thai pumpkin, vegetable and minestrone. There was also a large selection of breads and buns. We sat at tables of 8 and took turns to go up to the serving area with our bowls then on to get bread if we wanted it. As a bit of amusement, 24 photos of some of the residents as young people were stuck to a whiteboard – 12 boys and 12 girls. We had to try to put names to faces. This created a lot of fun and chat. They’re now talking of having a curry night which would probably get as good a response as their soup night.

Ha, seems funny to be talking about soup when we are near triple digits here

It was appreciated that night as it was quite chilly. Have you had cold soup? Vichyoisse (cucumber soup) is refreshing in summer. There are a few soups you can have cold.

@JudyEv I have and I like it. Vichoisse here is usually a potato soup I think .and served warm. I have had cucumber, strawberry and gazpacho soups cold.

@JudyEv - I imagine that it was very hard for you in the beginning. You had the habit to live in such a large space with no neighbors. Now you know that you took the right decision. We are also decluttering, I do not know for how long my husband can go up and down the stairs.

Maybe at last I feel we're settling in better and appreciating the benefits of being here -- especially with Vince's health issues.

@LadyDuck At least here, many of the houses do not have stairs although two- and three-storey homes are more common than they used to be. I've often heard of older people having to move when they can no longer manage the stairs.

The soup night at the clubhouse sounds like a blast, especially with the fun guessing game! A curry night sounds like a fantastic idea too. It's great to hear about such lively community events!

@JudyEv It's wonderful to see such active community engagement! Maybe they could consider expanding the venue or having multiple sessions to accommodate everyone who wants to participate.

They might need to limit numbers next time. It was pretty cramped but it wouldn't be any more cramped whether you had soup or curry.

@annierose Those are good ideas but I think they have enough work with putting it on just the once.

They had a great choice of breads. One loaf in particular reminded me of the lovely bread we used to get in France.

I had chicken and corn, then when they said we could go back for seconds I had vegetable. Both were very nice. And the bread was REALLY good! It reminded me of the bread we used to get in France.

Exciting choice of Soups. I am not much of a Soup person yet I might have been interested in such a Meet. Curry Night sounds promising as well! I hope Vince's health is improving. Are the Aussie newspapers making a lot of hue and cry about Aussies' exit from the T 20 World Cup or are they indifferent?

I haven't seen too much about the cricket other than headlines giving details, etc. We don't get a newspaper but I do read the news on my computer and we see it on TV each evening.

You have a well run clubhouse. Wish the Home here picked a few things. I have had Christmas parties there but they seem so sad and unhappy

This is a bit different to a nursing home as mostly we're all mobile and look after ourselves.
