Have you watched any of the Olympic events?

Have you been watching the Olympics? We hadn’t given much thought to it but once the games started, we did get a bit involved and have watched quite a bit. Australia has done well for the population we have but it’s great to see some of the smaller countries have some successes too. Two of our gold medal winners have come from the same small town of Camperdown, which is about two hours west of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The town is in the heart of dairy-farming country. The medal winners were Grace Brown who won Australia’s first gold medal in the women’s cycling time trial while Penny Smith won bronze in the trap shooting (clay pigeon) event. I was interested to hear the commentator’s remarks immediately before medals are awarded. She says ‘For those who can, would you please stand …..’. I thought it was a nice touch to acknowledge that not all might be able to stand. Have you watched any of the events? The stories behind some of the athletes are awe-inspiring too.

No, I haven't. I've seen some YouTube videos about the opening ceremony. Many Christians are boycotting the Olympics because of the anti-christian opening ceremony. There were trans people and drag queens recreating the last supper. It was deamed to be blasphemous, sick and evil. Also, a Christian surf-boarder was told to remove a picture of Christ off his board. So I'm joining the rest of the Christians in boycotting.

Fair enough. They tried to explain the last supper issue away saying it was something else but we didn't see it so I can't really comment. Good for you for sticking to your principles.

They say it was depicting the Feast of Dionysus, who was a Greek god, and not the last supper. He was also the father of Sequana, who is the goddess of the Seine river. It makes sense, but I can see why it caused confusion.

@Orson_Kart Yeah, well, it looked very like the last supper to Christians!

I mainly watched swimming and fencing. Hong Kong, as a small city, is doing well. We've won two gold medals and two bronze medals.

Some countries don't win any medals but I'm sure it's a great experience for the competitors.

I’ve watched quite a bit. GB are doing well in the medal table. Just as it should be for the amount of money we throw at it. The BBC have limited viewing rights, so I’ve not been able to watch my favourite sport - Women’s Beach Volleyball. Shame. I have watched some of the swimming and a lot of the athletics. The men’s pole vault was amazing last night, with the Swede breaking his own world record at 6.25m. In the women’s event, our Molly Caudrey (who was favourite) failed to register a qualifying jump. Shame again. I think they should also spare a thought for those with piles, who prefer to stand.

@Orson_Kart GB seems to be doing great in many Athletics events. In Field Hockey, GB gave a great fight to India, but India won in the penalty shoot outs. How is GB doing in sports like Volleyball, Swimming etc?

One TV channel here won the rights to show the Games and they have at least two channels of their own showing non-stop Olympics. Of course, they show more Australian athletes than others but we still have had a pretty good coverage overall. I couldn't believe that pole vaulter. The pole bent so much. Why didn't it 'unbend' in a different direction? lol

I have been watching the Olympics. In Tennis I was rooting for Novak and now he has become super Grand slam winner post Andre Agassi. I have been supporting India and has not had the success so far. 3 bronze medals all from shooting. We have not made the mark in the others. So far we have 5 4th positions in final events, all in this olympics. Thats a little unfortunate. However, atleast we have got more than 1 medal in the event. Hopefully , a few more may come. Australia has done well and well I too agree - some of the stories of the athletes are just awe inspiring!

@RevivedWarrior Indian sportsperson should have won more medals. Some like Mixed Doubles Archery Team, Manu Bhaker in 25M Air Pistol, Lakshya sen - Badminton and a few more came so close and missed the medals. Nikhat Zareen in Boxing & PV Sindhu ran across tough opponents. Yet if positive cues are taken, we would see India getting more medals in the future Olympics.

Some countries have more money to put into sports than others. I'm sure that plays a part in how successful countries are.

Well, I have not watched many events in live but I caught the highlights and recordings. Some were the events in which India won medals. Apart from that I watched Athletics events - 100M, 200M, 4 x 100M, 5000 M (Women's). I would like to watch more of the highlights but somehow I do not like our broadcaster's grouping of these highlights. It is not easy to go through. Greetings on the medals that Aussies won. How many Gold, Silver and Bronze? In Hockey though, India won after 52 years in Olympics against the Australian Men's Hockey Team !! And finished 3rd (Bronze Medal). India has 1 silver and 5 Bronze so far. There were some close finishes (In Five events, a fourth finish). So who is the Olympics Highlight broadcaster in Australia?

I found the endless replays a bit annoying. Once or twice would have been enough but we had to watch the same events over and over again. We ended up with 18 gold, 19 silver and 16 bronze. We were 4th on the ladder but per head of population we did really well. We had a number of different broadcasters. They were all really good.

No, I have no interest in it. Never really have. It’s funny: we have a baseball network, a football (our football, not “soccer”) network, a basketball network, and a hockey network. No gymnastics network, but we’re supposed to have a sudden fanaticism for it once every four years?

@JudyEv — the other problem with American coverage is it takes, oh, about two seconds for a diver to do their dive, and yet the announcers go on for twenty minutes about a two-second dive!

I have watched certain games when there are athletes that are local over the years. Both the summer as well as the winter games. Although Damian Warner and Maggie McNeil are both from the city here that we live in and I haven't watched anything of these olympics.

Yes, I've watched mainly the swimming and gymnastics. I thought it was a good touch after the medal ceremony last night when the four Australian women jumped into the pool. They got silver in the 4X100 medly.
