Turning into my grandmother

I think I’m turning into my grandmother. When she was old and her eyesight was deteriorating, she would darn dark work socks in yarn of a contrasting colour. Grandma found it hard to darn dark socks might end up with pink or yellow darning. Vince has a black drawstring bag that he keeps some of his blood sugar testing kit in. The side seam has split and I’m hand-sewing it. I started with black cotton but it’s really difficult to see. I might end up stitching it in white. No-one is ever going to see it. The photo is of my bedsocks. I have two pairs like this!

Good idea to use white, I am also having problem sewing with black or too dark colours. I like your night bedsocks.

@JudyEv - I need a lot more light than in the past if I use dark colours.

@LadyDuck I went to a craft group and one woman had a nifty little magnifying glass which had a light in it as well. I might treat myself to one, one day.

I went out in the sunlight and was able to get it done. I'd already started it so didn't want to have to start again unless I had to.

That's the latest trend in fashion these days and I ses many including my elder daughter doing it. She wears two different colour socks. It has become her style. I don't do that deliberately or for style. But I have odd pairs for my bed time or while I stay at home. Either one of the pair is lost or torn . I don't want to waste the other one and just use it.

Years ago, at a meeting, our headmaster was wearing odd socks but it wasn't a fashion at that point.

@arunima25 I worked with a lecturer once who accidently wore two different shoes to work. She put them on in a hurry and in the dark. What made it really funny was that she was lecturing on Alzheimer's.

@JudyEv I can imagine the embarassment. I have faced it once during my college days. I started very early for college and didn't want to wake my cousin who was my roommate. It was winter and still a bit dark at 7 in the morning. I chose two similar socks but one was grey and one was black. And I had half cut shoes, it was clearly visible. I stayed like that for whole day. It was a cold winter and I needed my feet warm

You’ve got a great sense of humour, Judy. You’re talking about women’s work here, so I shouldn’t really be commenting, but using contrasting thread sounds like the way to go.

It's okay. You can comment if you like - as long as you don't give advice! I didn't need to use contrasting thread in the end. I did the sewing outside in the sunlight so it's done now.

You're obviously in the northern hemisphere. In Australia, we don't need bedsocks in December!

What a precious legacy! My grandma was very old fashioned. When she got a new dress, she'd parade around like the Queen of the Ball:) Grandma's tummy was almost the same as her height!

@nela13 I know a lot of people can't bear wearing socks in bed even when it's cold. It's good we're all different I guess.

I think there are socks that really are like that nowadays. I do not know if that is a new fashion trend with two different designs or colors.

@JudyEv Yes, I believe it is already a fashion statement today. I believe they want to demonstrate that there is beauty in unconventional pairings.

Those like me who are mostly away from stitching cannot make out! Anyways the socks above look great! It doesn't matter if it is Black/Grey/White Wool or even a rainbow formation, if the final product is well stitched!! By the way do you like Orange and Purple colors?

I don't like orange. I look really awful in orange. I don't mind purple.

The darnings of my alpaca night socks are any color of wool I find around. Lately I have only darned them with an alpaca wool I found. It does not have anything to do with the oroginal colors of the socks but they now have many extra colors of darning along the yeras.

You do what you need to do to fix it. If anyone complains, tell them to buy you a new one. I love your socks…glad you have two pair like that, because they can come in handy in the winter.

In the end, I did the sewing outside in the sun and managed okay. It will last a bit longer but then it will be time for a new one.

I went out in the sun and managed it in black. I'd already done a couple of stitches and couldn't be bothered starting again. It's done now and will last a few more years. The bag doesn't get a lot of use.

I could darn if I had to but I don't think Vince would be very keen on wearing it/them anyway. I've darned small holes in a favourite jumper for him.

That is a special memory, I have to admit I do not darn anything but I do have a house dress that needs to have a side sewn up and I keep looking at it but so far cannot motivate myself to take a needle and thread to it, When mom was alive she was the one who fixed everything,

Anything that needed mending we took to my grandmother. She hated being idle and it was hard to keep her occupied so we'd take socks and mending to her.
