While it’s military day at the Fair, I’m not going today. It’s also Sunday, and a nice day, so it’ll be packed. I’m planning on going Tuesday. It’ll be rocking then, because it’s senior day. But it’s rocking now, with this next song on the list of songs that celebrate rock and roll in their title. Here’s today’s flashback. Rock On - David Essex You may not believe this, but David Essex actually DID record other songs! In fact, he has an OBE (Order of the British Empire), so he’s far more than the “one-hit wonder” that we know him as in America. He’s 77 now and still tours. Yeah, that’s our problem here: we get stuck on one song and forget everything else. But hey, this was a pretty darn good “one song” to get stuck on! Rock On Written by David Essex Recorded by David Essex From Rock On, 1973 Jimmy Dean, James Dean!

David Essex was very popular here, particularly in the 70’s. I’m surprised he only had one hit over there! Hold Me Close was written and sung by him, and got to No.1 in our pop charts. He also sang on the album The War of The Worlds. A bit of a heartthrob even now I think. Here is one of my favourites ‘Myfanwy’, which is a poem written by one of our most famous poets, Sir John Betjemen

That is superb! “Rock On” came out at a weird time, when John Denver was #1 one week and Alice Cooper the next. I love that; however, it seemed like America was looking for a “musical direction” at the time.

@FourWalls Back then it was actual physical sales that determined chart position. Now I think streaming etc is included and the figures are staggering. The UK sort of follows the same path as the US in terms of music. We’ve had a big influence over you since the 60’s and vice versa. I don’t know if Cilla Black was big over there in the 60’s, but I wished you’d kept her. I couldn’t stand her voice and never understood how her songs became hits?. No, I guess I didn’t have a heart.

@Orson_Kart — she wasn’t, which is probably why you got stuck with her. Fun trivia: she was responsible for the breakup of The Smiths. They covered “Work Is a Four-Letter Word,” and Johnny Marr didn’t see the humor in it, so he left and that was the end of The Smiths.

I know. It’s more of a “feel” song than something to dance to.

As I listened to this I SWEAR I have heard this before, but a different version. I am sure his was the original, but the version I hear that I cannot remember for the life who did it, was better as I remember it.

@FourWalls That would be the one. Yeppers. Definitely better than the original. Perhaps I simply find it a bit more refined.
