Yes, it’s early in this list of 100 songs that I rank as my favorite charted songs (I’m not saying “hit” because some of these didn’t crack the top 50
), but I’ve hit one that may have universal appeal. I say “may” because personal taste is just that: personal. Not everybody likes chocolate ice cream (stay away from those people
). Here’s today’s Hot 100 selection.
All I Have to Do is Dream - Everly Brothers
Instrumentally, the biggest thing is that one tremolo guitar chord from Chet Atkins (that’s him, in case you’re wondering why he’s in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
). This is Phil and Don’s vocal show from start to finish.
As for the “universal appeal,” this song was #1 on the pop charts, the country charts, AND the R&B charts.
One of the great enduring songs from the early days of rock and roll.
All I Have to Do is Dream
Written by Boudleaux Bryant
Recorded by the Everly Brothers
Released as a single, 1958
Peak chart position: #1
Today’s country song: “The Ballad of Ira Hayes”
I can make you mine:

Weren’t they just fabulous?! Ever seen photos of them in their Marine uniforms? (Here is a video of them on The Ed Sullivan Show fresh out of boot camp.)

I liked the Everly brothers but my most loved song by them was Wake up little Suzie.

That’s a fun song, and it was banned for indecency in a lot of places in America. Go figure.

@marguicha — when I did that list of songs banned by the radio last year I quickly noticed that the people shouting “That’s obscene” had much dirtier minds than the average person. I remember reading that one radio programmer told Grandpa Jones (back in the 1940s, mind you) that he couldn’t sing “Make Me a Pallet Down on the Floor” because the program director didn’t know what a “pallet” was (southern slang for a bed on the floor) but just “knew” it had to be dirty.

Has there ever been better harmonisers? I associate the Everly Brothers with the 60’s. I can’t believe this was released in ‘58!
We have a group over here that sings parody songs. They call themselves The Everly Pregnant Brothers, which is a double play on words.
Here’s one of their ‘hits’

Another terrific Everly's tune!
My favs are "Cathy's Clown" and "Bye Bye Love." Kind of a 1-1A in popularity depending on my mood at the time.
Their harmonies are so in tune. An introduction to future artists like The Beach Boys and The Bee Gees.

Yes, indeed, picking a favorite Everlys song is more a case of “what mood am I in today.” We had this 45, and the B-side was “Claudette” (written by Roy Orbison about his first wife). As a kid, I liked that better. With age comes wisdom.

Those harmonies could make the phone book sound good, but it’s a good song to start with.

@FourWalls Such timeless classics, yet if they were released today, they would die on the vine.

It is popular and such a beautiful song. I’d sing it with my guitar, too, if I could sing.
