9/15/24 - Update On My Husband

He didn't call last night; but there was something I forgot to tell you about our visit on Friday. He wasn't in his room when we arrived; but shortly after they wheeled him in from the shower. He got up from the shower chair by grabbing the vertical handrail on his bed and hoisting himself up. He had a great deal of difficulty getting into bed. He told me he was getting up and down without any help. Obviously this was an exaggeration. He has to be able to get out of his recliner without assistance...no grab rail. This concerns me. They came in the middle of the night the other day to take a blood sample. I have no idea why; and he didn't ask. Thank you for your continued support, prayers and thoughts. Photo Credit: Pixabay

He probably was very tired after his shower. I know he does not want to buy a lift chair without seeing it. Maybe you could get a rent to own one, then he could decide if he liked it and get exactly what he wants.

We would have to get rid of one of our recliners. There's no room.

Is there anyone you can talk to about his current situation. Why he needs to take blood sample etc.?

The most common reason to take blood is to minitor any medication he might be on. He'd also recently been sick, so that could be a reason why, too. Second of all, I think you're putting too much preasure on yourself and on him, to say that he can't use some kind of support to get in and out of his recliner . He could go home with a walker, or cane or some other insterment that he could use to help him gain his balance to get out of his recliner. But, if you keep telling yourself (and him) he needs to be able to do a, b, c, unassisted then that might be why he's still there and not home. I am fourty -one and a cripple. I use the arm of the couch, to stand. When I need to get to my feet, to transfer into a car, I use the arm rests on my chair to stand. Your husband is what 83? People his age often have medical devices to help them stand. Hell, my husband, George, had a stroke and uses the arm of the couch to help himself get off of it. So, maybe lower your expetations a bit? Don't make your husband feel more like a burdian then he probably already feels.

@LindaOHio Yes. if you're on a blood thinner it has to be regulated. The only way to regulate it is to get blood samples. I can understand about the cane or walker. George is the same way. When we're home he'll use nothing or hold onto walls and chairs to get around. When we're im public, he'll push my wheelchair or a shopping cart. Just like he did before. I think he's okay with that, because it benifits me because I can't see where I'm going. So it makes him feel normal. More like he's helping me.

They are probably taking his blood because he's on blood thinners. That must be monitored. I think my husband is very self conscious about using a walker or cane to get around. He thinks he should be able to be as mobile as he was in February.

The bed must be a different height if he struggles to get into it as opposed to the chair. But it is strange that he gave you a different story then what you witnessed. The blood work in the middle of the night sounds suspicious, you would wonder that they even have lab tecks working shift work.

when I was in the hosp they did me all through the night as well & while I was in rehab they had to put a port in me just to keep up with it but that didn't work out so good either cause it even failed.

I'm sorry you had so much trouble. I'm pretty sure they took his blood to monitor it because he's on blood thinners.

@LindaOHio that's what they put me on as well as well as water pills & heap of other meds I'm still on but from what my Sugar dr said the other day & my main dr they "SAY" I'm doing great, that remains to be true or not. Cause there's days I just don't have it in me to do anything but sleep & days that I just don't have the UMP to get motivated unless I JUST have to just to get the other 1/2 motivated which drives me NUTS.

A lift chair would work. However, you don't seem to want to follow through with that, or he doesn't or something. It must be disturbing when you can't trust what he is saying.

Couldn´t you add rails in places in your house so it would be easier? I changed my tub a few years ago to a big shower with rails. Should I need it, I can also buy a plastic terrace chair to shower while seated. And there are a couple of steps at my garage. I had Marco make 3 steps instead of 2 so they were easier to use. And I also added a rail there. It is not that expensive.

Someone is coming this week to put a grab bar in the shower. There are railings on the 3 steps to the garage; and I had the steps changed to less steep ones coming into the house.

@LindaOHio I’m sure he gets discouraged, he has done PT for months now. I know that it’s very tiring. My aunt was a heart patient, PT just exhausted her.

I remember you saying that you needed to talk to the therapist, maybe you can get an update from them. I have to say, he is persistent in his trying so hard to be more mobile, which has to be extremely difficult for him with the problems he has. So many people just give up, but it appears he is still trying very hard.
