Today I learned . . .

Today I learned that our local high school is teaching a class called "Life 100" to Seniors. I do not know if it is required or elective. First class of the year taught hands on how to change a tire, and also taught how to get the medical help you need. I have heard these types of classes proposed by many people online, but this is the first I have heard it being implemented. I am proud it is in our little town. More schools need to offer life skills training to graduating seniors.

It's about time! I hope they teach budgeting and how to balance a checkbook. Have a good week.

Those would both be good topics to learn. I think we covered some budgeting in my 8th grade Civics class.

@GardenGerty That's great. We didn't learn anything like that back in the 60s.

At the college my mom taught, and I attended, they had a class called Student Success Skills that was required for all freshman to take. It was the easiest class I ever took, but I realized not every student was set up to know how to approach basic skills of life outside their parent’s house, and this really did benefit a lot of students. I love that high schools are taking the initiative too by covering things like changing a tire. It’s something we should all know, but absolutely don’t.

When I was in college this was not offered but more like remedial reading and math for those struggling, plus how to use a planner, etc. and not everyone was required to take it. It sounds like a good plan. If we cover it as High School Seniors and cover it some more as college Freshmen, more people would go out into the world as competent citizens.

Those skills life "100" should be taught in all high schools in all Senior classes.

I think there are some places where people are planning ahead for the kids.

Never mind graduating students... it should be taught in elementary school, around grade 5 or 6. Maybe not the tire changing, but definitely how to get medical help.

My son is taking a life skills class they cook and learn to sew and do laundry I believe etc. He wanted to take it. They also have one that is an 8 week course offered locally from a thrift store my daughter works at and they do social work etc. Both programs are amazing! Every school and town should offer these things. So important to learn how to do things.

Years ago now I took a Community Schools course in Auto Mechanics. I was able to do a tune up on the old Buick I had then. I might take a seniors class if it was online.

We don't call our older students 'seniors' so at first i thought you were talking about elderly seniors! But this is a very good idea. There needs to be more of these types of classes.

I hear or see people say that they need to be taught. I am glad our school is doing something.

@GardenGerty Some don't seem to learn many life skills from their parents nowadays.
