These two lists were done separate from each other, with different Whitburn reference books, so if a song ended up on “the other” chart, it was a fluke and not something I did intentionally. Given that I have no control over the Billboard charts, and some of these songs predate my birth, I obviously didn’t control it. But this song did flounder below the top 40 on the country charts. You probably know this, so sing along. Garden Party - Rick Nelson A true story. On October 15, 1971, Rick Nelson played an “oldies” show at the Garden (Madison Square Garden, New York City). It was pretty disastrous from his perspective, so he wrote a song about it. Wow, did the song do well, even if his appearance at the concert didn’t! It topped the “easy listening” charts, made the top ten on the pop list, and (as I mentioned before) made the top 50 on the country charts. As far as Nelson’s later career, it’s the milestone. I’m sorry he had a rough experience, but wow did he turn anger into a classic song! Garden Party Written by Rick Nelson Recorded by Rick Nelson From Garden Party, 1972 Peak chart position: #6 (also charted #44 country) Today’s country song: “Crying in the Chapel” I’d rather drive a truck:

I remember hearing that song on the AM radio that my mother played in the kitchen while I was growing up.

@Juliaacv — I know. The sweet memories of listening to the Grand Ole Opry through the static (WSM is in Nashville, I was listening in Louisville) in the kitchen on Saturday night cannot be beat.

@FourWalls There wasn't any better place to hear things for the first time than on that old kitchen radio, life isn't like that today.

I remember the song. To me it was "easy listening." I liked it. But it wasn't like a John Prine song or something.

You’d rather drive a (pick-up) truck (off to the rodeo), I know.

Ahh, Ricky Ricardo what a funny guy! Oh, wrong Ricky were talking about "Rick" don't call me "Ricky" Nelson. One of the most popular teen idols (next to Elvis) at that time thanks to that TV show with his folks and brother which showcased his songs and good looks to all those teenyboppers' buying his singles. But I digress. Great pick and always enjoy listening to his travels around the world on "Travelin' Man." No Jailhouse Rock but he did use E's backup singers The Jordanaires.

Great philosophy in it, too: “You can’t please everyone so you’ve got to please yourself.”

That one was a big hit in its day. Who ever would have guessed it was about Madison Square Gardens?

That’s the case in a lot of songs, but that was 52 years ago and “got tired of it” wears off on a lot of songs.

Glad you enjoyed the stories. I love sharing them. One of my favorite things about reading about music is discovering the history of the songs.
