Hey, hey, look! Someone you’ve heard of!
It’s the first of three in a row from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members. You’re probably happy that you’ll at least recognize the names after all of these mid-level songs that barely peaked in the top 40 (or didn’t even make the top 40). Fortunately, I got to use the Hot 100 list instead of the Top 40 list (which is good, because I don’t have a Top 40 Whitburn). Anyway, here’s today’s song.
Long Long Time - Linda Ronstadt
I can’t post Linda without thinking of our long-gone myLotter John Roberts. He loved Linda. I miss him.
This song is 54 years old. It took a few years after this came out for Ronstadt to assume “superstar” status. You can hear in her amazing voice in this not-that-successful (peaked in the mid-20s on the chart) tune the absolute power and emotion she had in her voice that would carry her to superstar status. Wow, does she pack a punch in this song.
I’m still furious that Ronstadt had to announce that she was ill (she has Parkinson’s, which has silenced her lovely voice) for the Hall of Fame to induct her. But at least she was alive to enjoy the honor. And we get to enjoy her music for a long, long time.

From Silk Purse, 1970
Peak chart position: #25
Today’s country song: “I’ll Go to My Grave Loving You”

I miss her. Poor thing has MS now, and really can't sing. I heard Poor, Poor Pitiful me the other day on the radio and sang along as I used to be a huge fan of her music. I should play some youtube with her songs one of these days.

I’m so thankful we have all of those albums. I know that, if she hadn’t been forced by illness to retire, she’d still be making great music.

I remember this being played at the end of an episode of The Last of Us.
What a great singer she was. I only ever recall her being popular over here for singing One Day at a Time.

@FourWalls That’s because I’ve gotten her mixed up with Lena Martell.

I can’t find her singing “One Day At a Time,” and I never knew she covered it.

I’ve pretty much resigned myself to the belief that he passed away.

It is indeed. Jerry Jeff did a version of this, and his is a somber, “wishful thinking” rendition. Linda sounds like she’s out for blood.

@TheHorse — “Love Has No Pride.” (It’s Eric.) Co-writer Libby Titus just passed away the other day. (She was married to Donald Fagen of Steely Dan.)
Here’s the JJW version of “Long Long Time.” Completely different rendition of it, which is what I like: don’t try to duplicate the pain that Linda put in the song. He put his own spin on it, and it’s good. (No, not as good as Linda’s, but apples and oranges!)

@FourWalls Yep. Which is the one Erik Kaz (or is it Eric Kaz) wrote? That was a good one too.

She’s still kicking, though! Recently, Orangeface had a rally in her hometown of Tucson, Arizona, held at the Linda Ronstadt Center. She issued a letter to ensure that she had NO support for him in case anyone might think appearing at a place with her name on it was an endorsement.

I'm not going to lie, I I have always like Linda Ronstadt. Just such a sweet voice that never hurts the ears. If I can admit, she was always quite the looker as well...I'd have done her. lol
That aside, I can definitely hear vibes of "Can't Help Falling in Love," by Elvis Presley that influenced this. It lives just below the surface without question.

I’ll bet she could out-sing anybody on the charts now, at 78 with a number of problems affecting her speech and singing. What a set of pipes.

Yes I know the song and, of course, Linda. What a voice. Have a good day.

I didn’t like everything she did (most of the Living in the USA album makes me wince in pain), but the voice is undeniably unique.
