10/25/24 - Update On My Husband

Had a phone meeting with my husband's new social worker, etc. We have 100 days of coverage. On day 21 we will start to pay a co-pay of $240 per day. Our insurance company will continue to monitor my husband's progress and, as before, they can withdraw coverage with 2 days' notice. At that time he would either have to get out or we would go on full self-pay again. I would imagine that we could appeal as we have in the past.
I brought up my husband's roommate. They will see if they can transfer him to another room. Their doctor cannot do anything about his shoulder/arm. He will have to go to another doctor when he gets out. I asked about vaccinations...he has had a flu shot and pneumonia shots. He will get an RSV shot today which is great.
He didn't do much in PT yesterday. He was too tired.
Thank you for your continued prayers, support and thoughts.

Wow, at least they talked with you, and listened to you. Too bad about that arm. I would think they would offer to take him to another doctor and provide transportation.

@Marilynda1225 They could have the staff doctor look at it and order an in-house X-ray...but they chose not to.

Did you get any results on the heart test(the ultrasound) etc.? I am sure in part that will determine what happens.

It is good that he has been vaccinated as he has, do they no longer give the covid booster shots? I get mine every 6 months because I will not leave that to chance.
The insurance company's 2-day notice policy isn't very reassuring. I would be devising a Plan B immediately, especially if that is your main goal anyways for him to come back home again. I hope that you can do that.

@LindaOHio The press has downplayed the importance of remaining vaccinated, it is still very necessary because there are no masks and nobody practices social distancing. I keep a mask in my purse and put it on if I am in line somewhere. I went to the Italian Deli/Bakery today and stood in a 15 minute line up and I wore my mask to protect myself as it is cold and flu season.

They have the COVID-19 booster shots at the pharmacies; but I guess they don't consider them necessary in rehab. Even with the 2-day notice, if he isn't ready to come home, we will pay out-of-pocket as we did before.

I hope other options can be explored for down the road - my head is swimming in how coverage and costs work (it's really prompted me to learn more about Medicare - for my knowledge). Full self pay is so, so much. Keeping you both in my thoughts

@LindaOHio So much to think about for our futures - but so much money to cough up as well.

People need to think about long-term care insurance while they are still young.

100 days is a long time as long as you keep your expectations realistic.

@LindaOHio Therapy is good and all, but it's not the same thing as living life. You have to put those things int pratice which is hard to do in a controlled environment where you're expected to let others do everything for you. He's also not getting consistant daily therapies, either.

He's had therapy for about 8 months now...and he still is having trouble/falls. I'm cautiously optimistic.

@kaylachan I don't know what the answer is. I have to keep positive; but it's getting hard to do.

They feel he should go into long-term care; and we don't have long-term care insurance. They don't want to pay anymore.

You need to start calling every senior, county, disability, etc. group in your area to try to find resources for helping him if he is able to return home. TODAY. 2 days notice isn't enough to get anything set up. I know you are exhausted with dealing with all of this but you need to get on this pronto. You have already seen that he can't be kicked out and return home without significant help.
I don't know anything about your finances and none of it is my business but you also should probably contact a financial advisor. If you have assets that prevent your husband from being eligible for Medicaid (someone on here said that is necessary for assistance) then you will wind up parting with them to self-pay. . . but then what is left for you?

@LindaOHio that makes absolutely no sense that they won't give the information to you. You are his wife and next-of-kin or whatever the term is. You are responsible for him. Of course you need that info in order to plan and prepare.

@NJChicaa I probably should call and put him on the phone when we are at the rehab facility so that he can find out what his options are.

(a co-pay of $240 per day) I sure hope that doesn't happen
that will be expensive, I hope things get better for both of you
cause from all I've heard so far, it's not good.
