Not what we wanted to hear

My husband is one of seven. One sister passed away some time ago; the youngest brother turned 75 on the first of December and the photo shows the trifle we were offered. The two eldest brothers (88 and 85) shared a birthday yesterday.
However, the eldest is in hospital where they are trying to find the site of a primary cancer. The secondaries are in his brain although not causing too many problems yet.
The 85-year-old lives in Bali and has already lost a good part of his lungs. The weather suits him there and he is well-liked and cared for in the local community. He has also gone into hospital and is unlikely to be able to fly back to Australia.
So it’s not really the sort of news anyone wants to get just before Christmas.

At 88, I think the thiking is that he is too old to have an operation and the alternatives (radiography and chemotherapy) aren't very attractive either. We're still waiting to get more news. The 85-year-old has already been told there is nothing to be done.

@JudyEv In fact, we have a good family friend settled in Sydney. We used to have a good time in Indonesia when we both were working nearly forty years ago.
He is 87 plus and his wife is past 83. Despite our wanting to visit them, we are unable to as we are not able to travel long distances. Thankfully, we are in touch over the phone often. We did spend time with them twenty years ago and they used to visit us too earlier.

That is really not good news. Sending prayers for both of them.

I’m sure sorry. Not good to have happen anytime, but over the holidays makes it harder.

It is worse. Makes it hard to even want to celebrate. All we can do is try to get through it, as harsh as that sounds, if there is nothing a person can do to help the sick one or the one going through end of life, it makes it so sad and heartbreaking.

Three births in December? We know what their parents were doing to keep warm in your winter...

It is sad, but at least it sounds like they are in good living situations. That's something.

You are so right. They both have loving, supportive families. The one in Bali doesn't have any immediate family there but his church community are very caring.

Thanks Marilyn. It's sad at any time but around Christmas and birthdays, it just seems a bit worse.
