Since I haven't heard from my husband in a week, I don't have any real news. Today we will bring him his replacement phone so he will be able to call me. For some reason he doesn't like using the room phone.
We will see what the long-term care wing looks like and who his roommate is. I have to call the social worker AGAIN to get some costs for physical therapy and to find out what type of "activities" the residents take part in. Are they dressed and put in a wheelchair? Are there activities that they can participate in?, etc.
Thank you for your continued prayers, support and thoughts.

@LindaOHio My wife’s aunt is now in a care home and we are not happy with it. Poor lady has dementia and no longer flushes the toilet but staff don’t bother checking and doing it for her. Most of her clothes have not come back from the laundry and they have her dressed most bizarrely in other residents clothes - no dignity.

I am sure that you will have a nice visit today.
When I worked in the long term care sector, years ago, we had a residential wing and an extended care wing.
I was the activity director.
Some activities I could do for the entire facility such as seasonal parties and weekly bingos, as the 'better' ones would assist those who required help with bingo. Some of them would even help out with portering residents from the heavy care wing. The aides would employ their help for that.
I had special activities that I would have for the extended care folks. I would have everything from baking sessions to having residents (with dementia) in while I played music and had them fold the facecloths and towels, they always found that very relaxing especially on days when they were agitated.
I would do chair exercise groups for each wing, and reality orientation simple crafts and so on.
I would think that they would do the very same.

That's wonderful. I haven't seen any evidence of anything like that.

@Juliaacv He's not a joiner; so it's not very likely.

I hope you got to visit, The important thing is how his well-being is. Has he gotten used to this idea or is he depressed? Blessings to you both and I hope you had a good visit,

I'm sure he's not happy. He said he will be home for Christmas. Fortunately he forgot about that and didn't mention it again. He needs more time out of bed and more stimulation.

@LindaOHio I don't know why but I thought all nursing homes had to have activity directors.

@sallypup I'm sure they do. My husband is not a "joiner".

I don't think that's the case. My husband was in bed all week. They dressed him and put him in a wheelchair before we got there yesterday.

Most care facilities have a wide range of activities and are required to document attendance and refusals. At least where I have worked. You should see an activity calendar posted in his room as well as menus. I hope they are doing a good job.

They have a long way to go until I'm satisfied with his care. I need to call the social worker today.

Why didn't you think of doing that before deciding to put him in long term care? Addationally, if he isn't aided up and kept clean or premitted to move and join others, that's criminal neglect and the place would be shut down.

@LindaOHio I hate to tell you, residents tend to call the shots here. When you put a person in a nursing home, the nurses and aides can only force them to stay clean and take meds. If he hasn't gotten in his wheelchair and left his room, it could be because he didn't want to. And, they can't force him to be social. You, as far as he's concerned, have given up on him. He doesn't see you as much as he would like and that's depressing. You've been focused on what he can't do and not what he can't. And, instead of bringing him home and working on what he can do, you're more scared of what he can't. That's got to weigh on him emotionally.

Long term care was the only option. He was dressed and in a wheelchair by the nurse's station yesterday. His roommate said that was the first time in a week. Not happy with that.

Thank you. He needs to be careful with the phone because there are no room phones in long term care.

It’s so sobering and sad that the money being paid is for WHAT? You could put him at a Hampton Inn for half the price (and probably better service).

Yup. It would be about 1/3 of the cost to put him in a hotel.
