Unexpected

Last year, my mom was agreeable to taking senior tai chi classes (if I take them with her). Benefits would include having a routine for health, but I also thought it would be good for her sociability. Two office ladies who signed us up have been most helpful from the start. Each week when we go to class, my mom and I pass by their office doors to say "HI" . They have always been friendly and encouraging to my mom. During the holidays, I had my mom play Santa Claus to leave a card and very small gift on these ladies' desks . At the potluck party I spoke of in my last post, one of them thanked us. She asked if the other office lady "told us" . . . we had no clue what she was talking about. Apparently they arranged to gift us the next 8 week session of tai chi classes - we would not have to pay. This was most kind and unexpected . My mom is only delighted to continue tai chi . I wish you all good things and happenings in this New Year!

Wow, that's totally awesome. I'm so glad your mom is enjoying these classes. Soon she'll start getting to know someone to hang out with .... at least I hope so.

So far she only takes that 1 tai chi class per week. They just opened up a 2nd class on a different day, but she still only wants to go once a week. For her, that is a lot . . . I have never known her to ever take a class. Oh I would love for her to "hang out" with someone, but maybe that is a lot for right now too. We'll keep trying though .

@rebelann My parents dealt with family members all the time since we did have a pretty big family, so friends weren't really needed. But the extended family is just not a thing anymore, so we are left with just ourselves. I want my mom to see there are other people who can care other than family. And it's helping me too . . . to make sure I keep up with myself as well.

Yeah, you're right, it is a lot for any elder especially when the individual had such a long and happy marriage where socialization wasn't a big deal in those years

We had only given them each a chocolate teddy bear - a very small gesture on our part. The class for us both are substantially more - so we were shocked (but happy).

We were shocked . . . had to do a double take on what was said because at first we didn't understand. Never has this happened to us before! Doing the James Brown "I Feel Good" moves .

@changjiangzhibin89 Our Tai Chi Master tells us each and every time that this way of exercise is great for seniors. The deep breathing and slow movements is calming yet effective. Hopefully she will continue with this for a long time.

With the way prices are going these days, we are only too happy they did this for us. My mom and I first started tai chi by watching videos - lots of them on YT. I hope tai chi gets offered out your way!
