Strange behaviour

@DaddyEvil talking of hoarding just made me think of other people I knew and their strange behaviour. Once upon a time, a long time ago, two of my student friends shared a house with another young man they knew. As he was the last of the three of them to arrive, he got the smallest bedroom. So when he left several bags of his things in the living room that just seemed natural, maybe he didn’t have enough space to put it anywhere else. Then one day his parents came down to visit. They took him out to lunch and then shopping for clothes. When he got home he just dumped everything in bags on the floor. Eventually he was asked why he didn’t put any of his stuff away, and he said he had no space in his room. So one day when he was out we went to have a look. True, his room was quite small, but it was also completely empty apart from the furniture. There was a decent-sized wardrobe with not a single garment hanging in it. Meanwhile in the living room there was a heap of black bin bags containing clothes, including some very nice things his parents had obviously bought for him. We couldn’t understand why he didn’t put his things away and look after them properly, but we never found out. I wonder what has happened to him since? Maybe he somehow found an organised wife to take care of everything. Or maybe he lives in squalor somewhere. I guess we will never know. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2025.

@fleura There’s no accounting for people’s foibles. That’s why they’re foibles, and isn’t great we have such a lovely word for it. Foibles. So much more pleasant and less judgmental than insanity.

Foibles suggests strangeness though. It's a strange word for starters.

In my life right now I have things I am thinking of perhaps getting rid of because down the line who will want them,

That would have bothered me to have a mess out there.

That's exactly what Tom was doing, too... Just leaving new clothes and stuff in the store bags and piling them up without ever doing anything with them. People can be strange.

That does seem really strange. I wonder what the reason was and how awful that you'll never know!! I think it would be eating away at me!

I can't even remember his name now! I think it was Steven something-or-other. He was odd in some other ways too! Maybe I'll write about him again when I've got some work out of the way!

I am a minimalist. I live out of a duffel bag. Even this morning, I got rid of some things and immediately felt better.

Sounds like he was used to his mom doing all the stuff for him.

Maybe, although technically he was an adult at the time. I am curious but I have no idea what happened to him.

That is very mysterious behavior.

Maybe he was just unimaginative and was used to having everything done for him.

That's a fascinating and somewhat perplexing story! It definitely sounds like there was something more going on than just a lack of space. It's interesting how people's behaviors can be so different.
