I went in and got mild salsa (we don't buy any other kind) and corn chips for my lunch and I feel like my mouth is on fire! I checked the salsa again and it says it's mild... I ate half a dozen chips with salsa and started dabbing at my lips. That was the first hint I had that the salsa was too warm for me! I asked Pretty to taste it and she agreed it was too hot! I'll be throwing the rest of that half gallon bottle of salsa in the trash! Photo is mine. Chips and salsa.

I would be writing to the company explaining your experience, they may send you coupons for some free product as an olive branch.

Yes, I should try that. We do like mild salsa on burritos and I eat it once in a while on corn chips... Thanks for the reminder!

A shame to waste that big of a container. Are you going to call the company or just figure it was made that way on purpose? Makes a person wonder what the hot one would be like. Ikes!

Pretty says that's the same salsa we normally buy but it's never burned my mouth before. I asked her to write to the company and tell them we got a jug marked "mild" that definitely has too much jalapeno in it. She said she would. Normally, I use mild salsa when I'm eating burritos.

Too bad you can't use the salsa, I also always get the mild kind, Great Value at Walmart has a wonderful chunky salsa I get mild and always tastes great, I use it for different things I make even on top of chicken and pork sausage patties,

That's the brand we buy and I've never had a problem with it before. I don't know why this jug tastes so hot... I mostly use salsa on burritos when I eat them. Pretty said she'd send an email and complain about it. I don't know what they'll say or do about it, though.

Good, mild salsa should taste like tomatoes, onions, garlic and sweet peppers. A medium salsa should still taste like tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, garlic and a little bit of jalapenos... A HOT! salsa should taste like a LOT of jalapenos but you still should be able to see tomatoes, onions and sweet peppers. I wonder if the salsa you tried didn't have spices mixed in with it?

@dfollin I really like mild salsa on burritos when we have them. I don't eat chips and salsa very often but do have it once in a while.

I have to agree that some versions of mild salsa are not mild. I am allergic to hot peppers, I can only eat the bell peppers or the sweet little peppers. My son can’t eat them either. No sense landing in the ER because our throats swell shut. We have epi pens, but some hot peppers are really hot!!

We normally buy the Walmart brand of salsa and it's never burned my mouth before. I think they mislabeled a bottle or a batch of it and we got one that was medium instead of mild. I eat it all the time on burritos but have never gotten any that burned my mouth. Pretty sent an email to the company complaining about it. I don't know that they'll do anything, though.

@MarieCoyle I've never made salsa before and wouldn't want to try. The closest Aldi is 50 miles away. It's cheaper to buy the Walmart brand we normally use.

@DaddyEvil I make and can homemade salsa every summer. I had it geared down to just what I use, but now the son is here and he loves salsa, so we have plowed through the homemade I canned last summer. I've been buying the Aldi brand mild salsa, he really likes that one. Big huge jar and it's not expensive. Probably similar to the Walmart brand.

How strange! I wonder if they changed the recipe . . . that's happened with some food products here. Or maybe that batch got mixed up and was mislabeled. Or darn . . . I would have gladly taken that spicy salsa off your hands .

Salsa is a mix of raw tomatoes chopped finely, onions diced and sweet peppers diced together and mixed with garlic and seasonings like black pepper and salt. It's really good as a sauce on certain types of foods or eaten with deep fried corn chips. If you also dice jalapenos (hot peppers), you can make it spicier and hot, depending on how much hot peppers you add to the mix. I can't eat jalapenos. They burn my mouth.

@DaddyEvil We don't have jalapeno here in our town. However a similar chilli is available here.We call it shimla mirch.I don't like it; because it is not hot. I like green hot chilli.

@Shivram59 My body doesn't do "hot" foods like that anymore. I used to eat jalapenos filled with cheddar cheese and deep fried in batter. But, after I got rectal cancer, what my body can handle changed so I started avoiding spicy hot foods.

Oh no, that's frustrating! It’s surprising how some "mild" salsas can pack a punch. At least you realized it before finishing the whole bottle! It’s always a bummer to waste food, but it’s great that you had Pretty to help confirm the heat level. Have you thought about trying a different brand next time, or maybe making your own salsa to control the spiciness?

That's the brand we normally buy. I think they mixed up the labels on the bottles this time. Pretty sent an email to the company and we'll see if they say or do anything about it. If they do something, we might get a coupon for a free bottle... If they don't, it was only about $3, so not a big loss.
