How do you feel about zoos?

Some animals can’t be released back in the wild, and some zoos have breeding programs to keep animals from being wiped off the map, but there is no arguing most zoos don’t have a lot of room for the animals. So I’ve heard differing opinions on zoos. Some wildlife parks, technically not zoos, are quite impressive. What do you guys think?

I think most zoos are partners in animal care and conservation, but they aren't all created equal that is for sure.

I love going to zoos, even though I haven't been to 1 in a good while I also think it's a great Idea that some zoos give the animals a new chance in their lives to release them back into the wild.

Zoos are okay with me as a spectator but I understand the outrage from critics that animals are locked up being cages.

We have few animals in the zoo in my country. But I think we have a lot of cobras and reticulated pythons here in the wild .

Most of our larger zoos seem to be run well and do treat the animals well. The best thing about zoos to me is, that we can see animals we would never see otherwise. I have issues with the people who set up these little carnivals here and there in the summertime, with ponies hooked up to a big wheel to ride little kids around and around in 100 degree heat, etc. I always feel so bad for those poor ponies. I don't see as many of these as I used to, but sometimes one will show up. The last one I saw was last summer, in front of a farm store in a nearby town. Someone reported them to officials for mistreating animals (they had no drinking water at all and it was HOT outside!) and confiscated the animals.

@AmbiePam Not to try to sound preachy or self-righteous, but we are supposed to be stewards of the animals. I feel taking care of them is a privilege...and some people have absolutely no business having pets. I spent too many years doing rescue work and seeing so many neglected and mistreated. It's just so sad.

I think that zoos have advanced greatly in recent years. They aren’t “prisons for animals” anymore (which is what they seemed like when I was little), but educational and conservation sites. I think the St. Louis Zoo, where Marlin Perkins (host of Wild Kingdom) was the director, made great strides in changing the way zoos are operated and perceived. Having said that, I think there are a lot of things called “zoos” that aren’t that way. We’ve had a number of places shut down for inhumane treatment of animals all over the country. I’m glad to support zoos that are “on the level” in helping educate us about animals and contribute to their preservation.

One I always trusted, and I think it’s because I saw how much scrutiny it got, was the Australia Zoo because of Steve Irwin.

I know I always enjoyed taking my kids to the zoo when they were young but of course zoos back then weren't the best for the animals. I think zoos are okay if they give the animals enough space to thrive. It is interesting to be able to see animals that you normally wouldn't be able to.

I agree with your comments but thankfully zoos do seem a lot better run than they used to be. At least the ones in Australia are. I wasn't impressed with the zoo in Vienna. The animals there looked pretty miserable.

I'm torn. I don't like seeing animals in captivity; but some wildlife parks are really nice and give the animals a large area in which to roam.

I think it’s good to feel the way you do. It compels us all to keep zoos and parks in favorable conditions for the animals.

It’s a complex issue, for sure. On one hand, zoos and wildlife parks can provide a safe haven for animals that can't thrive in the wild, and they can contribute to conservation efforts and educate the public about wildlife. On the other hand, the conditions in many zoos can be less than ideal, with limited space and enrichment opportunities for the animals. Wildlife parks often offer a more natural setting that allows animals more freedom to roam and exhibit natural behaviors. It really depends on the individual facility and its commitment to animal welfare and conservation. What do you think are the most important factors when evaluating the ethics of a zoo or wildlife park?

The proper diet and enough square footage for animal comfort. As much comfort as the animal can have, that is. I want them to have room to run. I don’t mean they all have to be in parks, but they should have sufficient space to really work out energy.

I have not been to the OKC in ages, but judging from my childhood to the last time I saw it, it is magnificent. For the most part the zoos we have been to have been innovative in providing good spaces and social stimulation for the animals, as well as proper care. I know some are not that great.

They are definitely not all the greatest. I have been to some that seemed to do a good job with their care and living environment and others that were pitiful.

I don't like see lions in ZOO. So powerful animal in closed space. They should be in wildernes showing their strength.
