Growing Up

My little twin granddaughters are really growing up, so quickly. Today, at the tender age of just 3 years old, they had their third-ever dentist appointment. The first couple were fine, teeth were coming in well and everything looked great. Today was a bit different. The dentist could definitely tell that they brush often which was a bonus, on the downside, Willow had some spots on a front tooth. Harper is quick to brush her teeth much more often then Sissy is. Harper reaches for salty snacks whereas Willow likes the sweet ones. They are going to attempt to do a follow up for Willow on Thursday. They will see how much work they can get done, depending on how she takes the laughing gas. And of course they were advised to have the children learn to floss their teeth. Now their morning prep time will really change drastically. But Grandpa can handle it, as he is the one to get them out the door every morning by 9am to attend the playgroup program. When was your last cavity discovered? I think that age 3 is very young, but many children don't even see a dentist until they are school-aged.

I believe I never had contact with a dentist until I was 15 years old. This was when I join Army and dentist check was a part of Army medical. I discovered a cavity last week, in my gum when a tooth came out. Very painful.

I had some fillings done 30-something odd years ago but just broke a molar a few months ago that still needs to be taken care of by my dentist. We just don't have a way to get to the dentist's office right now.

@DaddyEvil That's great that your car is on it's way to being fixed. I am alright with the dental work that I have, it isn't perfect, but I have a huge fear of being in the dentist chair and having 2 or 3 hands in my mouth. I get that pinned in feeling.

@Juliaacv The tooth that broke doesn't hurt anymore so I chew on it like I always did. The garage picked up the car yesterday morning for repair so I should be able to get to the dentist soon. I hope you can get to a dentist soon and have your tooth fixed. I don't like to lose teeth, either.

@Juliaacv I'm sorry that happens to you. I had a really bad experience with a dentist when I was 16 and get very uncomfortable even thinking about going to a dentist... As long as nothing hurts, I put it off as long as I possibly can. Other than the broken tooth, my teeth are in good shape.

I couldn't tell you .maybe 10 years ago, but I discovered one myself recently, and that tooth actually needs a root canal now. I can tell

Children seem to be starting school younger and younger. And, if they're eating solids, it's important to havetheir teeth checked.

@Juliaacv Well some school take children as young as 3 here so long as they're potty trained.

@kaylachan Not here, not unless it is daycare that you pay for. No school takes our children at that age, trained or not, it isn't in the tax budget to allow for education at that age.

Here Jr. Kindergarten begins full time at age 4, so it is quite young. They need to be flossing as soon as their teeth have grown in, to the point where they are touching each other. That has just happened recently with the girls.

I hope Willow's experience on Thursday is a good one. My experience with dentists hasn't been a good one. My daughter had a horrible experience with laughing gas years ago. It makes me shudder to think of it.

She has her follow up appointment this morning, and I hope that she does well also. I've never had laughing gas, so I am not aware of how it can affect a person.

This discussion comes when I'm already suffering from tooth pain. I've lost half of my back lower tooth. It was no pain when that happened. But it was a bit later on. So I can relate to this discussion quite quickly and easily. But as far as your grand daughters are concerned, it'd great to hear that they brush often. My father always made it a point for me to not sleep before brushing my teeth. Brushing habits are always good ones.

@Juliaacv Oh come on. Don't be sorry. That's fine now. The pain was the reason that I couldn't be active here for a couple of days or so.

Yes, our son and his wife have excellent health benefits from their employers and it enables them to get the children in very early for dental care. It is good to start good dental habits.

Poor Willow, I am sorry she needs dentist work so young. I never went to a dentist before going to school. My last cavity was discovered in 2020, a wisdom tooth, so the dentist pulled it out.

I remember when you had that wisdom tooth pulled. The dentist told our son that Willow is tongue-tied, and should get it clipped. They are going to have her assessed by a speech language pathologist as well as the pediatrician.

@LadyDuck I don't know if Willow will need to be clipped either. She had her filling today and did wonderfully and felt great afterwards. So proud of that little girl.

Awww poor Willow having to deal with the dentist at such a young age. I think it's a good thing children are going to the dentist at younger ages and can learn how to brush and floss properly. My kids didn't go to the dentist until school age and thankfully none of them really had any teeth issues until it was time for braces.

You must have done a great job teaching them to floss and brush properly. They began going to the dentist before their second birthday I believe. But they have never had anything besides the dentist taking a peek in their mouths and taking x-rays. Willow was brave today. Our son and his wife didn't get her up earlier to eat, and she had to fast for 2 hours before the procedure, so she was 'starving' from the time she woke until lunch. Poor kid.

Poor little soul. That sounds very young to have cavities. I hope she and Grandpa cope okay.

@JudyEv Yes, she did really good today. The only downfall was that since she had to fast 2 hours before her appointment they should have woke her earlier to let her have breakfast, but they didn't do that, and she said she was 'starved' all morning long. Typical kid.

@Juliaacv Such new experiences could be quite frightening. Children have to trust their 'significant adults' so much.

me and my teeth, that's some sensitive topic for me, in this stage of my life but, as a child, maybe cause we had more experienced dentists or dental material was more lasting, i rarely go to my dentist and i think i had my first cavity when i was around 6,7, maybe. don't worry, Willow will be good also, i have suspicions towards hard water; too much good but also bad things in it.

The first time I went to the dentist was when I was 12 years old and it was a painful and frightening experience. I hated my first time with the dentist . He was not professional and he did not make an effort to calm me down when I was panicking he had no people skills.

I saw a dentist when toothache became unbearable. I was into my teens then. Now parents are more aware of "prevention is better than cure".

I question if our son pushing to have this done is right, even the dentist said it could wait 6 months.
