Sloppy Joes

The history of the sloppy joe is a bit messy, much like the sandwich itself, with a few competing origin stories. Do you like them or have you ever had them? Do you add anything different to yours? One popular theory traces its roots back to Sioux City, Iowa, in the 1930s. Legend has it that a cook named Joe at Floyd Angell's café added tomato sauce to the region's popular "loose meat" sandwich (a simpler version with just seasoned ground beef on a bun), creating a saucier, more "sloppy" version that became a hit.

I like them but I make Sloppy Joes with more onion and a mix of ground beef and ground pork.

@dfollin I mix 3/4 lbs hamburger with 1/4 lbs sausage and dice 1/2 an onion into a skillet and brown those, then drain off the liquids before adding a can of Chunky Manwich.

I like our version of sloppy Joes once in a while too. I like to eat mine on a soft tortilla shell with a bit of shredded cheese. It is so filling.

Is Sloppy Joe and Manwich the same thing? I do have a recipe for it - just haven't made it in a long time. We like green bell pepper in ours.

I don't know that we have these here. When I was growing up a sloppy joe was a very loose-fitting sweater.

Remember them from when I was kid and living in Chicago. I had some packets of Sloppy Joe in my time, it didn't quite taste the same. Found a recipe online for making them without the mix. Must try it
