Locked 'em Up!

Well, I must say, the camping weekend went fantabulously, aside from some cooler nights and a bit more rain than we would have preferred. But hey, that's camping. Even when you have all the luxuries of home, or most of them, you still have to rough it at least a little bit, I suppose. On the way home, though, it turned out I had to lock up the breaks on the truck and camper-in-tow for what some might consider a rather ridiculous reason. A female mallard duck in the middle of the road. Call me a fool, but I just didn't have the heart to cream her just because, if I had any ability or control to avoid it. I don't like hitting animals. Any animal, and I will generally brake for them if it's possible to do it. Hey, it's a life. I feel I have a personal responsibility to preserve it, especially as an intelligent member of the top of the food chain. Even if my intelligence might be in question if I'd have lost control and totaled my truck and camper... For a duck. I'm just going to go on a bit of a stretch here and say, that in this particular moment in time, and perhaps for the first time in my entire natural life, have I been directly in the presence of... A real-life, lucky duck.

I can't believe you feel you have to justify why you didn't just kill her.

lol. Well, I guess when you consider slamming on your brakes with 8000 pounds of house attached to you, which is a sure recipe to possibly jackknife might be one of them, maybe it makes a LITTLE sense?

He was a very luck duck. Many, MANY people I know would have simply kept going and let fate do what fate does.

Lucky duck for sure!! Running over that duck with all that weight would have left it as part of the road. Talk about squashed

Thanks. I just didn't want to hit the thing. Luckily, there was no one behind me otherwise I may have had no choice. But at the same time, it may have been a really bad situation since I could have jackknifed or something.

@porwest I don't mind snakes or alligators. Crocs are nasty....but they make pretty good flip flops.

I love all animals. Well, except snakes, alligators, crocodiles...or pretty much anything that can kill me or eat me.

Lucky duck indeed! First, glad you had a fun time on your camping trip. Second, I would have done the same thing, no matter what living creature was in the road. I'm not a fan of running over animals if I can avoid it. And third, I had to lock up my brakes last night when a couple of deer darted out into the road right in front of me. Luckily, none of them were hit, and we all lived to see another day.

A lot of people just wouldnt care , nice to here that there are still nice, kind, thoughful people around. So the duck gets to quack another day .

Even though I love to eat duck I would not want it run over by a car. I am glad you ducked what could’ve been a big disaster for both you and the duck.
