So, I was out scurrying around tried to get my steps in again before the heavens opened up again. I look down and off in the grass was a medium sized black snake. If I had been any closer I probably would have stepped on it. Snakes don't worry me one bit, unless they are copperheads or rattlers. Fortunately, I don't think I have seen any of those. When it has been raining, turtles and to a lesser extent snakes like to come on the road and dry off. I didn't see it on the way back though..it must have slithered through.

I am usually startled to see them, but not surprised. They are around, and beneficial as far as I am concerned.

@sallypup The only snake I am really leery of around here are copperheads and corn snakes look quite a bit like them. Only some of the markings are different.

@snowy22315 I agree. Snakes are benefical. My corner just has garter snakes but I haven't seen any here yet. They're harmless snakes.

Black snakes aren't dangerous. I don't have a fear of snakes.

I will see a few when the weather is warmer. One time we were having a big wind storm, and the weather was starting to get cold. I looked at the window and it looked like there was a bow on it. I looked closer, and there was a baby snake all curled up. He didn't want to be in the wind and was hoping to get some heat from the house. I thought I was going to have to move it, but the next day thankfully he had moved on.

I know you do, but the vast majority are beneficial and keep rodent populations down.

Talk about a close call dealing with a snake in the grass.

They won't hurt you unless you happen to step on one.

@LadyDuck Well, if you can't swim, being afraid of dark water seems logical.

@snowy22315 - I know that there is no reason to be scared, but it's a phobia, same as my fear of deep water.

No, they would bite you, and you couldn't blame them.

I love almost all wildlife, but snakes and skunks are just not my thing. I am glad to hear it slithered off!

Skunks are in the area, but I haven't seen one in this development, knock on wood.

When I lived in southern IL. I used to see them a lot. Here, not as much, but I don't miss them. Some people argue they are cute...maybe so, but I don't want to get close enough to find out!
