A day out with family

We and Vince’s brother went to visit the remaining brother and his wife. The older brother turned 81 a day or two ago and in the last year or so, has suddenly become very old and frail. He was always the ‘project manager’ for our various family working bees and it’s sad to see him ageing so quickly. However, we shared some great memories, including one that was very funny. His wife used to board with the family when she first started working and the pair were attracted to each other and started going out. One night, at the dinner table, BIL’s mother said, ‘M, that’s my leg you’re rubbing.’ We’d heard the story before but it’s always good for retelling. This time it was made funnier by younger BIL saying ‘I hope it was below the knee’. The photo shows the ‘birthday boy’ and his wife. It was taken quite a few years ago.

I hope it was below the knee, too. OMG! That's funny! At least I never made a mistake like that! I just kept getting caught up in eating contests with my girlfriend's brothers....

Eating contests? I would be hopeless at those. What would you eat?

@JudyEv Yes, at Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners... We ate everything on the table. My girlfriend's mom could really cook!

Yes, thanks. He's still trying to get rid of belongings and I don't think he has found a house/room yet.

That is a cute story. You married into such a loving and close family, it must pain you both to see them age especially when it is quickly.

The family went from six to four in just two days. It seems really odd now that there are only four but get-togethers will be easier to arrange now.

@JudyEv Since Ron's eldest brother, Rick, passed a few years ago, I still count them as 8 in the family, but that number is really 7. We gather less now, which isn't right.

@Juliaacv We'll probably make the trip from time to time. It's easier at the moment for us to go to them rather than the other way round.

Nobody can stop the advance of old age. Vince’s elder brother never has thought that becomes a laughingstock !

He has had a lot of skin cancers removed so I'm not sure if that is affecting him.

We had a nice time on that trip too. We followed an old track that men would take to get to the goldfields.

How embarrassing but funny! Getting old is no fun. I am dreading it. Sometimes I'm afraid that I'm actually wishing it upon myself because of fretting over it so much!

You don't realise what you're losing until you've lost it if that makes sense. And now my balance is getting worse and worse. But you stay active and engaged. I'm sure you'll be fine for a good few years yet. And Big One and Little One will help keep you young.

It's always sad to see someone age so fast. My robust husband aged about 10 years during that year that he was in the hospital and rehab. It was tragic. I'm glad you got to spend some time with the brothers.

I remember your husband went downhill really quickly once he had that fall. The brothers have always been quite close. We'll get together again soon.

I laughed as it sounds like something that could happen to many people. In my case my name is the same as my Mom's and had a boyfriend that would call and say our name without saying who was calling. He asked my Mom out several times to lunch and when my Mom finally told me that she gets more date offers than me I told him that my Mom answers the phone. He was so red and didn't call again.
