We have two resident kookaburras

We worked most of yesterday on the balustrade at my daughter’s house but Vince found time to take this photo of the kookaburras. So we now know that there are two that visit the garden here. I didn’t get a photo of the two together so I asked nicely and Vince has given permission for me to share this with you. I also can’t find my camera at the moment but I want to take another photo of the balustrade. It’s proving very frustrating.

I saw one in person at Kentucky Down Under, and then I understood the song!

@JudyEv — that’s where I got to pet the kangaroos!! And hold a snake! (Although I’ve done that in a lot of places…)

@FourWalls That's great. I often see posts about wandering kangaroos and emus too.

Do they laugh? Are they the ones with the crazy song? I think a friend from Oz sent me a recording of kookaburras laughing

Yes, they do laugh. They're often called 'laughing jackass' although not so much now. If you weren't used to them, their call could be quite scary.

@JudyEv It's all the time a problem when new species are introduced, the fight for food.

They are not actually native to our state but were introduced from the east. They compete with native species for food and territory.

@LadyDuck And often with birds, it's also a competition for nesting places especially if it's hollow logs that the birds need.

Very nice photo. Thank Vince for me, please and thank you. I hope you find your camera soon. It annoys me when I can't find something I know I just had.

I'm glad you like the photo. I've found my camera now and have taken a couple of photos of the balustrade we've been working on.

@JudyEv I tried to figure out if those were male or female kookaburras but couldn't tell. Do you know what they are? A pair or just singletons? I'm glad you found your camera. I hope it doesn't go walk-about on its own again.

@DaddyEvil I imagine they're a pair. They don't go around in flocks so I'm thinking they're a pair. I've given my camera a good talking-to and it's promised to behave.

Nice photo! Are kookaburras mean birds, or are they nice birds? My favorite coffee shop here in my city is an Australian coffeehouse named The Kookaburra!

That's nice to know about your coffee shop. Kookaburras aren't native to WA (not your WA, our WA) and are a bit of pest. They compete with the local species for nesting places in particular.

Oh they are cute! Is that the male, the darker one on the left with brighter beak? Only saying that because so many species here are that way; males are colorful and the females not so much.

I had to look it up but I'd say the one on the left is the female. Males have blue feathers on the tail and females have a reddish tail with black bars.

@kareng I like to know these things too. Sometimes I know that I used to know the answer but too much time has gone by since I last thought about it and I've forgotten.

@JudyEv As kids we were taught countless of such songs. In the video it is the U that is used. We sing it with A

It seems a great many myLotters have learnt this at school. We say the 'burra' with an 'u' sound rather than a 'you' sound. I'm surprised so many know the song.

They are very good at killing snakes too. They drop the snakes from a great height and it breaks their backs.

They do have quite a human-like 'laugh'. It must have been scary for the early settlers when they heard the call for the first time.

That song must have been very popular in the States. Many myLotters seem to have learnt it at school. They are largemembers of the kingfisher family between 28 and 47 cm (11 and 19 in) in length. They are have loud, distinctive, raucous call and often referred to as a 'laughing jackass'. They are carnivorous and not hard to tame if there is food around.
