It's a bank Holiday today.

Today is a bank holiday in the UK. Officially there are 8 bank holidays each year with some variations in the UK. England & Wales have 8, Scotland has 9 & Northern Ireland has 10. This bank holiday is late spring bank holiday or Whitsun bank holiday as most bank holidays are religious based. We used to spend the day at the beach or visit a park. Bank holidays started off in the 1800's giving bank employees an extra days leave. Eventually it was adopted by businesses & schools. Although we have 8 bank holidays we are one country with the lowest number of holidays. Nepal has a staggering 35 bank holidays. There is only one day a year when it is against the law for large supermarkets to open & that is on Easter Sunday. They will be fined if they do so. In the last few years there are some supermarkets that do open as it is far cheaper to pay a fine than close for the day. This does not apply to Scotland. If you work a bank holiday you might get enhanced pay & a day off in lieu. I worked for 17 years before l had a Christmas holiday. It was really great to be off over the Christmas period & spend it with my family. In the last 15 years l worked no bank holidays which was really nice. Some people hate working bank holidays but there are others in need of the extra pay. Hospitals never close neither do people stop having accidents or having heart attacks so we all had to take our turns at working bank holidays. I used to prioritise those staff with young families. Having the time off to spend with their kids. How many bank holidays do you get where you live? I know it differs from country to country. How do you spend your holiday?

@garymarsh6 I hate them. All of them. Roads are crowded as are cafes, nice forest walks etc. I love it when everyone goes back to work and school and us retirees can breathe again. Yes I’m an atrabilious old codger!

It is Memorial Day here. The closest we have to a bank holiday is probably Labor Day. There is really nothing specific for banks but banks are closed here on federal holidays. That is a lovely pic.

@garymarsh6 Maybe they were having wildfires somewhere then, and the sky just reflected it.

There are 11 Federal holidays in the US. I used to work most of them and get an alternate day off work. I liked the extra pay for working on the holiday. When Pretty was little, I always tried to get Christmas off but, as she got older, I'd volunteer to work Christmas so people with younger kids could have the day off. (Pretty and I would go shopping the day after Christmas and she'd pick out extra gifts at half price. ) Holidays now are just another day and we don't celebrate any of them. *shrug*

@garymarsh6 I've only been stuck in a few traffic jams. It wasn't a pleasurable experience.

We don't go out these days to have the joys of sitting in traffic jams!

@DaddyEvil horrible I would call it. We spend the days at home now & let the kids find out themselves how frustrating it is. My daughter & family are all out somewhere probably sitting in traffic as we speak! The worst roads are to the seaside & the M25 which circles London.

We don't call them 'bank hoidays but rather 'public holidays'. They mean the same thing. Seven are observed by all states: New Year's Day, Australia Day (although ti might be undergoing a name change), Anzac Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day. Then there are three more, specific to our state, WA. These are Labour Day, West Australia Day and the King's Birthday. The other states have days specific to themselves.

We get four or five federal holidays that fall on Mondays. and then the usual Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Valentine's Day, Easter, 4th of July, and New Year's. Oh, and Mother's and Father's Days too. I don't know about the 'bank' holidays. I think those are the federal ones.

Mothers day is in March & fathers day in June. They are not actual holidays in the UK as they are always on Sunday.

India is very interesting & has a very complex system of holidays. 4 Government statutary days plus State days, New Year days & religious festivals, Birth and anniversary days, Harvest festival days. I was in India for Independence day & on our recent visit Pongal.

I have never counted how many holidays our banks are closed on but I know it is at least 11 from what I've read in other comments. By the way, did you take that stunning photo?

Our long weekend is Memorial Day but any day off from work is appreciated. Its basically the unofficial start to summer but the weather hasn't cooperated at all.
