The Dollar Tree is not the same

Yesterday, I went to The Dollar Tree for the first time in a while. My mom needed a watering can and she didn’t want to spend a lot of money on it. She mentioned this store so I went there to see if one is for sale there. I remember when all items used to be $1. Then the store raised its prices to $1.25. I expected everything in the store to be $1.25. Turns out that’s not the case anymore. Why? I saw some things there that were $3. I think they were towels of some kind. Wonder what the most expensive item is at the store and how much it costs. Thankfully, the watering can was $1.25 (+tax). I don’t think I’d pay more than that for it.

I don’t know if there are any 99¢ stores that actually have only 99¢ items.

I always joked that the reason Dollar General was called that because nothing was generally a dollar. lol Before you know it, Dollar Tree will be just another Dollar General or Family Dollar.

We have similar stores but, while everything is quite cheap, many items are more than $1.

@lovebuglena I would think that would be the case.

Real dollar stores where everything is a dollar probably don’t exist anymore.

I think they started selling $3 and $5 items last year. I try to use them sparingly as the quality is iffy on some things.

What do you usually get there?

@lovebuglena I used to get some cleaning supplies, and tissue paper, wrapping paper, and once, in desperation, batteries. Tissue paper was the only thing that didn’t disappoint. Hard to mess that up.

@AmbiePam I bought measuring cups, basting brush, pizza cutter, little cutting boards, and colander there. Also sometimes bought aluminum trays there that you throw away after use. Quart or sandwich bags. Stuff like that.

Yes, they changed prices on some merchandise there last year or two years ago. (I forget which now.) Everything should be clearly marked, though. I used to buy the small candles for $1 in the local store but haven't bought those in several years.

@lovebuglena Because the cost of the materials and making things have gone up in the last couple of years. They still have to make their money, just like Walmart or Target.

I wonder why they sell stuff that way more than a dollar now.

They have dramatically changed their concept. Before you know it, Dollar Tree will be just another Dollar General or Family Dollar. I buy less and less from Dollar Tree because the prices are not really as good as they seem on most items, and less and less present value to me.

It’s not as exciting going there anymore. When they used to be $1 sometimes they weren’t the cheapest for some items.

@lovebuglena You still have to know your prices. There were a lot of items that were more expensive even at a dollar, agreed.

I noticed how our Dollar Tree in town is not as good as it used to be. It doesn't have as many products as it used to.
