It's Fake But It's REALLY Good!

Strawberry sorbet, sorta. Photo taken by and the property of FourWalls.

Last week I was in the grocery and saw some strawberry sorbet on clearance, so I got a pint. The "regular" price was ridiculous, so there was no way I was going to buy more if I liked it. Well, I did like it, so what's my option? Make my own! Now, if you have looked up recipes online you've probably run into this: "three ingredients" that ends up being 14 or 15 ingredients, or "three simple steps" which has a dozen steps combined into the first step. I found that looking for a recipe for sorbet, where it said "sugar free" then had sugar or honey as one of the ingredients. But the gist of sorbet is pretty simple: fruit, mashed to a pulp, sweetened, then frozen. Enter my fake strawberry sorbet. I got a bag of frozen strawberries at the store and put a cup of them in the blender. I added Splenda and just enough water to make it something that looked like sorbet instead of a glob of strawberry mush. Result? It's fake, but it's REALLY good! I'll be making some more of that, as well as experimenting with other frozen fruit. Bring on summer!

That's a really good idea to make your own and it's way better for you than anything store bought.

@FourWalls I wonder if one could take a cup of strawberries and whirl it with a ripe banana and skip all the sweeteners? I may try that. If it ever gets warm here.

@GardenGerty — a couple of frozen grapes might put some sweet kick in it, too.

You bet. No three ounces of strawberries and four cups of sugar.

Yeah those recipes that claim only a few ingredients/steps are annoying because they never are actually that simple. Mike and I are like you, we just experiment to what we like and most of the time it comes out good. Now you have me thinking about making some sorbet.

I have come across recipes that have just 3 ingredient and for once they are telling the truth I made mango jam and all what I needed was mango pulp, sugar and sour lime It turned out great. They said the same thing about mango ice cream but there were more than 3 ingredients - mango pulp, sugar, milk and milk cream

Yes, I've seen recipes that say it has three ingredients and then it keep adding more throughout the recipe... They piss me off. I'm glad you've figured out something you enjoy.

“Simple” then you see a 45 minute prep time…or the prep time is 5 minutes but it takes two hours to do the steps to get to a five-minute prep time. Thanks. It’s incredibly simple, and I like it, so who cares if it’s “not real sorbet.”

@FourWalls Exactly! It makes me want to yell at the person who wrote that recipe. You're welcome. As long as you enjoy it, it doesn't matter if it's nor "real".

The strawberry sorbet on clearance must be near the shelf life.Nothing beats homemade strawberry sorbet according to your own recipe !

It had a LOT of “freezer frost” on it, so it had been sitting there for a long time.

I haven’t had homemade ice cream since I was a kid. It was a staple of the picnic/anniversary party at my grandparents’ house every year.

I've had that too. Only a few ingredients or a few steps but it still ends up taking more ingredients and half a day to make. Your sorbet sounds delicious.

One of the recipes had “one ingredient” as “simple syrup,” which, of course, you have to make.
